Tesla (TSLA) revealed its Q1 2025 vehicle deliveries and energy storage sales figures on Wednesday. While the company’s car sales have dropped compared to QoQ and YoY, Tesla has emerged as a major player in the energy storage business.

Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and sustainable energy company, Tesla, produced 345,454 cars and delivered 323,800 units to customers in Q1. In the first quarter, Tesla reported sales of 10.4 GWh of energy storage products.

The first quarter is usually slow for automotive and EV sales worldwide. However, Tesla’s sales dropped significantly compared to the same quarter last year.

While Tesla’s automotive sales dropped by around 15% YoY in Q1, its energy storage products performed way above expectations. Tesla’s commercial battery energy storage system (BESS) Megpack and home-use Powerwall products saw a growth of around 153% in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024.

As usual, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y accounted for the majority of Tesla vehicle deliveries. ‘Other Models’ include the Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X EVs, which saw a major drop in sales this quarter.

Tesla sold a total of only 12,881 Model S, X, and Cybertruck units combined. This is the high-end luxury segment of Tesla cars that saw a major hit of a 32% drop in YoY sales compared to Q1 2024.

The electric automaker has announced a Model S and Model X refresh coming this year. This has most probably impacted the sales of these vehicles even more. Looking at the numbers, Cybertruck sales haven’t picked-up pace as Tesla had expected.

Tesla does not report the Cybertruck sales numbers separately, so any number out there can be a close guess, not the exact figure.

Model Y and Model 3 on the other hand, faced a smaller sales drop of ~13% compared to Q1 of last year. However, compared to Q4 2024, the deliveries of these top-selling models dropped by a significant 45.7% (471,930 vs 323,800 units) QoQ.

Tesla launched the new design-refreshed Model Y mid-sized electric SUV in China, APAC, and Europe at the start of January. A couple of weeks later, the electric vehicle also went on sale in North America.

According to Tesla, the retooling of all 4 of its car manufacturing plants halted the production of its new Model Y Juniper. Although the automaker received a large number of orders for this new electric vehicle, production hurdles limited the deliveries. Tesla wrote in its official Q1 2025 press release:

While the changeover of Model Y lines across all four of our factories led to the loss of several weeks of production in Q1, the ramp of the New Model Y continues to go well.

Tesla Energy Growth

Tesla’s energy business started taking off from Q2 2024 when it doubled compared to Q1 2024. From this point on, Tesla Energy is showing exponential growth.

In Q1 2024, Tesla deployed around 4.1 GWh of sustainable energy generation and storage products. According to the latest report, Tesla has deployed 10.4 GWh of energy storage in Q1 2025. This is a staggering 153% growth YoY in Q1.

In the year 2024, Tesla earned around $10.1 billion in revenues from its energy storage and deployment business alone. This revenue came from the deployment of 31.4 GWh of battery energy storage (both Megapack and Powerwall) + solar.

With 10.4 GWh already bagged by Tesla in Q1, this segment of the company’s business is expected to grow even further in 2025.
