In a surprising announcement on X, Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk gave a new timeline for the rollout of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) version 14 (FSD v14).
Last month, Musk predicted that the FSD v14 rollout would start in about 6 weeks. However, during a podcast interview last week, Elon Musk said that FSD v14, which will make your car feel sentient — would come in a few months.
Yesterday, Musk again adjusted the timeline for the rollout of FSD v14. He also confirmed that the ‘sentient’ subversion point release would still make it to Tesla cars in a couple of months.
Musk wrote on X:
Version 14.0 goes into early wide release next week, then 14.1 about 2 weeks later and finally 14.2. The car will feel almost like it is sentient being by 14.2.
We can break down Musk’s FSD v14 rollout announcement as:
- FSD v14.0 will start rolling out to early access beta testers (original group) next week
- FSD v14.1 would take around 2 weeks from the release of FSD v14.0, and the circle of users getting it would also be wider, as data from initial tests is going to provide safety feedback, and this version’s real-world effectiveness at various traffic scenarios
- FSD v14.2 (the Tesla FSD sentient update) is going to roll out around Christmas, IMO, as it’s going to be the ideal time for testing and promotion during the holidays
In another tweet last month, Elon Musk said that FSD v14 is going to be the biggest update after V12. Tesla started a limited rollout of FSD v12 in January 2025. The lifespan of FSD v12 updates point releases spanned around 1.5 years.
“Version 14 is the second biggest update to Tesla AI/Autopilot ever after V12,” Musk posted on X. FSD v14 is going to be available only on the newer HW4 (AI4) vehicles.
FSD v14 Hype, Anticipation, and Expectations
There’s a lot of hype surrounding the launch of Tesla’s FSD v14. Initially, it was believed that this would be the first installment of Unsupervised FSD. However, FSD v14 is still going to be FSD (Supervised).
Tesla owners and enthusiasts are anxiously waiting for the update. They expected the rollout to begin in September because of the ~6 weeks timeline given by Elon Musk earlier.
Besides the hype, expectations from FSD v14 are also high. Although it’s a Supervised version of FSD, Tesla owners, investors, and enthusiasts expect it to iron out issues and enhance safety measures significantly.
Musk has consistently promised better-than-human driver performance from Tesla FSD. However, the current FSD v13 update does not reach this mark.
