Following a fast-track from development to production, Tesla (TSLA) has officially launched the new Model Y L in China. In our previous report, we covered the size and dimensions comparison with the regular Model Y Juniper.

On its official website for China, Tesla unveiled the new Model Y L with pictures, videos, and key specifications (below). The ‘L’ stands for the increased Length and the ability to seat 6 persons in the electric SUV.

The new Model Y L is only available for sale in China right now. However, Tesla and EV enthusiasts in North America can’t seem to praise the design and practicality of the car enough and are anticipating its release in this region.

Tesla estimates that the deliveries of the new Model Y L will start in China in September 2025 (next month).

Tesla Model Y L: Exterior

To accommodate the third-row seat, Tesla increased the length and wheelbase of the new Model Y L by 6 inches compared to the regular Model Y.

Tesla also slightly modified the roof height and hatchback door curve to create the needed headroom for the last row passengers. Due to this change, the noticeable difference is a bulkier rear-end of the vehicle. However, it has the same reflective rear lights as the regular Model Y Juniper.

Tesla has also kept the front-end design the same as the regular Model Y.

Aerodynamics

Despite the change at the rear-end of the vehicle, Tesla Model Y L boasts the same level of aerodynamics that defines the automaker’s excellence in engineering.

With the launch of the Juniper generation of the Model Y, Tesla improved aerodynamics by about 4%. The coefficient of drag (Cd) is not officially announced for the Chinese Model Y L, but the regular Model Y has a Cd of 0.22.

Tesla Model Y L: 6-Seat Interior

Accommodating 6 people inside is the prime reason that the Model Y electric SUV went through this change — becoming longer and taller. With a longer wheelbase and a bulged rear, Tesla successfully planted six seats in the new Model Y L.

The images of the white interior that Tesla China has shared show the elegant 6-seat configuration. Tesla (TSLA) is expecting this new variation of the Model Y to penetrate the Chinese market even further, giving a tough time to the Chinese EV makers.

Model Y L Range

Tesla China is advertising a CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle)-based range of 751 km of the new Model Y L on its website. According to the EV Range converter, this is equal to 327 miles of range according to the US EPA standard.

Range of the Tesla Model Y L is exactly the same as the US Model Y Long Range AWD. Seems, the additional length and weight of the vehicle didn’t affect range figures or Tesla might have installed a slightly larger battery in the Model Y L.

The following table shows the Tesla Model Y L range conversion to various global standards for calculating electric vehicle range:

CLTC751 km
US EPA (NHTSA)527 km (327 miles)
WLTP (Europe)616 km
NEDC724 km
