Polestar is the electric vehicle manufacturing arm of Volvo Cars — on this Valentine’s Day, the Swedish automaker released an ad for its Polestar 2 EV that aimed light-hearted humor at Elon Musk and his companies Tesla and SpaceX.
It is kind of a short teaser video of Polestar 2 with the first part of the title saying “No Compromises”. When Tesla influencer Sawyer Merritt posted this video commercial on Twitter, Elon Musk just posted a laughing-hard emoji in reply.
Following is the list of taglines in order of appearance as the visuals change showing the Polestar logo and at last the Polestar 2 EV.
- No epic voiceovers
- No punchlines
- No dieselgate
- No conquering Mars
- No dirty secrets
- No hidden agenda
- No empty promises
- No shortcuts
- No settling
- No greenwashing
- No blah blah blah
- No nonsense
- No committees
- No consensus
- No compromises
These lines not just mock Elon Musk and Tesla but also Volkswagen as it mentions “Dieselgate” — a scandal that the biggest car company in the world is paying for still.
The “No conquering Mars”, “No empty promises” and “No blah blah blah” were specifically aimed at Elon Musk. In the past, Musk has missed some production and delivery timelines at Tesla and he posts on Twitter too much, Polestar hinted at these points in the ad towards him.
Reportedly, Volvo spent a hefty $7 million on airing this ad during Super Bowl and Tesla never airs its ads on TV.
According to Auto News Europe, only a total of 29,000 Polestar 2 EVs were sold last year (2021). The Swedish automaker aims to sell 69,000 Polestar 2 electric cars in 2022.
While Tesla delivered 308,600 vehicles in Q4 2021 alone. 69K Polestar 2 EV target does not even equal Tesla’s one month of deliveries from Giga Shanghai and Fremont. Tesla’s production and delivery numbers are to skyrocket even further since Giga Texas has already started Model Y production and Giga Berlin is going to start soon.
Back in 2020, my friend and Tesla Model 3 AWD owner Ian Pavelko got a chance to have a Polestar 2 at his office with the help of his journalist friend from Montreal, Canada. We got some great side-by-side pics of both cars for comparison. Polestar 2 is neither a compact sedan like the Model 3 nor is it a Model Y-type SUV.
One target Polestar did achieve by mocking Elon Musk in this ad, the video has received around 255K views as of this writing. Let’s watch this hilarious commercial and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
