Get your Cybertruck tonneau cover fixed by Tesla as a free waterproof upgrade

Tesla (TSLA) is asking owners of the Cybertruck to get the tonneau cover fixed for an issue that causes the rain or car wash water to enter the pickup truck’s bed.

Tonneua covers of some Cybertruck units have an exposed water management channel. This creates a gap between the slats of the auto-folding tonneau cover and causes the water to ingress in wet conditions.

A Cybertruck owner on Reddit posted his experience with this problem. He took his truck to a Tesla Service Center and the staff inspected the tonneau cover. Tesla staff explained the issue as follows (technician notes):

Inspect Tonneau Cover for Exposed Water Management Channel

Technician Notes:

Technician inspected the tonneau cover for an exposed water management channel as per the service bulletin. Installed new slat to the tonneau.

Technician inspected and verified the need for a waterproof upgrade on the tonneau cover as requested by the customer. The upgrade was necessary to enhance the cover’s performance in wet conditions.

After this owner posted this issue on Reddit, several other Cybertruck owners also reported that they are also having this problem (water seeping through the gap created due to improper installation and alignment of the slats). Both last year and 2025 production Cybertrucks are affected with this problem.

Tesla is fixing this minor issue under warranty, free of cost. If additional hardware is needed (bushings, bolts, sealings, etc.), Tesla might charge $5-10 depending on the situation. However, Tesla is not charging for an additional slat if needed to be installed.

This service issue does not apply to the recently launched stripped-down Cybertruck Long Range RWD variant because it doesn’t come with a tonneau cover. However, Tesla is offering a soft tonneau cover on this base Cybertruck trim that does not auto-open or close.

If your Cybertruck is facing this issue, you should visit a Tesla Service Center and get an appointment to fix it. According to other owners, it takes around 8 hours or a full day at the Tesla workshop to get slats in place and make the bed waterproof.
