It took Tesla (TSLA) only 7 months from groundbreaking to the start of production of its Megafactory in Shanghai, China.
This new Megafactory rolled off its first Megapack battery pack off the production line yesterday. The Tesla team at the Shanghai Megafactory celebrated the event. The official Tesla Asia account on X (Twitter) shared the highlights of this event.
Megapack battery packs produced at Megafactory Shanghai will be used in large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) around the globe.

According to Tesla, Megafactory Shanghai can produce up to 10,000 Megapacks a year (40 GWh). Combined with the Megafactory in the United States, Tesla’s annual Megapack production capacity has reached 20,000 units.
20,000 units of Tesla Megapacks translates to around 80 GWh of battery storage a year. A single unit of a Tesla Megapack can store more than 3.9 MWh of energy, so 20,000 Megapacks = ~80 GWh.
According to Tesla, the first Megapacks produced at the Chinese Tesla Megafactory will be exported to Australia for a BESS project. The exciting news was shared on the official timeline of Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

In 2024, Tesla’s vehicle production dropped compared to 2023 but the company’s sustainable energy generation and battery storage business grew exponentially.
With the production capacity increased by 100% and billions of dollars of contracts at hand, Tesla’s energy business is bound to grow even more this year. Tesla Megafactories will add a fair share of revenue aside from what the company makes from its electric vehicle business.
The Chinese media also covered the successful start of the Megafactory Shanghai. The following video shows some amazing views of the Megafactory from the outside and inside as well.
