There was a time when Tesla cars would play ‘Toccata and Fugue in D Minor’ as someone suspicious approached the vehicle. Playing spooky vampire-ish music was abandoned due to copyright issues and massive battery drain.
Fast-forward 6 years, Sentry Mode has matured and is more intelligent than it was in its earlier form. Tesla is making constant tweaks to Sentry Mode to enhance vehicle security and capture as much evidence of vandalism as possible. It’s all achieved using free over-the-air (OTA) software updates to Tesla vehicles.
In the latest update version 2025.26, Tesla has brought further improvements to Sentry Mode. In case of a suspicious person approaching, Teslas will now turn on red accent lighting of the vehicle in addition to displaying a Sentry Mode warning icon on the center touchscreen.

Accent lighting in Tesla vehicles is dynamic and can display a wide spectrum of colors. For Sentry Mode warnings, Tesla chose the obvious red color because it’s a warning.
In this year’s Spring Update, Tesla also activated the B-pillar cameras for Sentry Mode. So, a Tesla vehicle is now able to watch 360° around it. A person approaching a Tesla vehicle with bad intentions or vandalism should know that these cars have cameras all around them.
If the warning on the car’s screen is not visible, the accent lighting blinking should be good for a visual warning.
In a recent ICE protest in Seattle, a protester warned others to stay away from a Cybertruck as it has cameras and could get you in trouble.
Feature Compatibility (2025.26)
Accent or ambient lighting is required to have this improved Sentry Mode feature with the 2025.26 Tesla software update. Unfortunately, legacy Tesla cars don’t have ambient/accent lighting.
The following Tesla electric vehicles are equipped with accent/ambient lighting:
- Tesla Model 3 Highland
- Tesla Model Y Juniper
- Tesla Model S and X produced in or after June 2025
- Tesla Cybertruck
