Tesla begins FSD v13.2.8 rollout in China after Full Self-Driving went through a name change

Some Chinese Tesla vehicle owners have reported via social media that the automaker has begun a limited rollout of the latest FSD v13.2.8 software in the country.

This development is interesting as just last week, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) applied strict regulations on the use of self-driving software. The Chinese regulatory authority made stringent policies to be followed by the local and foreign automakers offering autonomous features in their vehicles.

In February, Tesla launched its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in China. As the videos showing Tesla vehicles driving autonomously went viral, showing minimal human supervision on Chinese roads, this activity alerted government authorities responsible for policies around vehicle safety and autonomous driving technology.

The major trigger for these stricter policies came after a Xiaomi SU7 electric car using autonomous features hit a concrete barrier resulting in a fatal accident in China.

Tesla (TSLA) was already stopped using words such as ‘Autopilot’ or ‘Full Self-Driving / FSD’ in its marketing and deployment by the Chinese government. Tesla then renamed the FSD software package in China. The closest translation of the new name would be ‘Intelligent Assisted Driving (IAD)’.

However, because today’s world is so connected, many Chinese Tesla owners are still calling it FSD.

Interestingly, the first report of FSD v13.2.8 going out to a Tesla owner in China came after he visited a Tesla service center. The staff at the store upgraded his car from FSD v13.2.6 to FSD v13.2.8.

The new Chinese regulatory guidelines prohibit automakers from inducting the general public as beta testers for their self-driving software. However, owners already using FSD on their vehicles might also get newer updates.

Tesla China employees are actively testing new versions of FSD internally. However, a Chinese Tesla owner posted his conversation on Weibo and X that hints that external Tesla owners are also going to get the new FSD versions later this month and in May. Tesla staff told him to keep an eye on the notification to install newer versions of FSD (Intelligent Assisted Driving in China).

FSD v13.2.8 is the latest version of FSD (Supervised) as of this writing. Around 70% of the FSD beta testers in North America have installed this subversion of the main FSD V13 update (source: TeslaFi.com).
