Tesla launches Robotaxi Service in two more Florida cities

After Texas, Elon Musk’s tech & AI-based electric automaker, Tesla (TSLA), has targeted Florida for the expansion of its Robotaxi autonomous ride-hailing service.

Earlier this month, Tesla launched the Robotaxi Service in Miami, Florida. Now, a few days later, the automaker has expanded it to two more cities: Tampa and Orlando, FL (area coverage details below).

Like Miami, Tesla has chalked out small geofenced areas of both cities for the initial rollout of the Robotaxi Service. This helps start slowly and with caution, and Tesla later on adds large areas as Unsupervised FSD AI learns more and more about the city’s specific roads and traffic conditions.

The prime example of this service expansion is Austin, Texas, where Tesla has now included the Greater Austin metropolitan area in its Robotaxi geofence.

When a person calls a Tesla Robotaxi in Orlando or Tampa, the Model Y comes to the location all on its own. There is no safety personnel present in the vehicle (it uses Tesla’s Unsupervised Full Self-Driving AI to reach the users and then to the destination).

Currently, Tesla’s unsupervised ride-hailing service is operational in geofenced areas of Tampa and Orlando (see maps below). The interactive version of this map is available to Tesla Robotaxi app users in Miami, Florida, to ensure the service is available in their area.

The Orlando Tesla Robotaxi Service covers a moderately sized initial zone in central/southern Orlando, primarily along the Semoran Boulevard (SR 436) and Lee Vista Boulevard corridor, near but not including Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Key Boundaries & Coverage

  • North: Roughly bounded by State Road 417 (Central Florida Greeneway).
  • South: Extends toward State Road 528 (Beachline Expressway).
  • The zone has an irregular, somewhat rectangular/trapezoid shape that stretches east-west more than north-south.
  • It focuses on a mix of commercial, residential, and light industrial areas along major corridors.

Key Boundaries & Coverage

The rough estimate of the covered area for Orlando is anywhere between 12 and 20 square miles.

Orlando’s Tesla Robotaxi Service is focused on a compact central/northwest Tampa zone around State Road 41 (Nebraska Ave / Bus. 41). It includes neighborhoods like Tampa Heights, West Tampa (Old West Tampa), Riverside Heights, parts of Hyde Park, and central Tampa areas.
