Tesla phone app has a “Charge Your Non-Tesla” section, v4.19 provides better battery insights

Tesla’s latest mobile app has a section for non-Tesla EV owners who want to utilize Superchargers or Destination chargers to charge their EVs.

This new “Charge Your Non-Tesla” section not only provides charging information but also guides other EV owners about the dos and don’ts at a Tesla Supercharger station.

My friend Gail Alfar who is an enthusiastic Tesla owner from Austin, TX, and has even met Elon Musk once, shared the following compilation of screenshots of this new app section in one of her tweets.

It is interesting to see that Tesla takes other EV owners seriously and attempts to educate them on the basics of using Tesla charging equipment either at a Supercharger stall or a wall charger.

One more important charging etiquette that Tesla has pointed out in one of the slides is the position of parking when using a Supercharger stall. Because different car manufacturers install charge ports in different locations of their EVs, therefore some EV owners park their cars sideways resulting in the obstruction of other stalls and charging spaces.

The Tesla mobile app also provides a Membership option for non-Tesla owners and aims to reward EV owners with discounts in return for their loyalty.

Additionally, the Membership tab also provides EV drivers with map data that shows which Tesla Supercharger is open for non-Tesla EVs and which one is not (with a lock icon, see screenshot below).

Only the non-Tesla electric vehicles equipped with the CCS charge port are currently supported by select Tesla Superchargers (found on the map using the Tesla phone app). The Tesla support website explains this phenomenon as follows:

This pilot is only accessible for CCS-enabled vehicles. If a Supercharger post has two cables or an installed adapter, non-Tesla cars can only charge with the CCS connector. Tesla is unable to accommodate vehicles that do not fully comply with CCS communication and safety protocols. If you encounter any issues while charging your vehicle, reach out to Tesla Customer Support or your vehicle manufacturer.

The availability of Tesla Superchargers to non-Tesla EVs is currently only supported in the following countries:

  • United States
  • Australia
  • France
  • The Netherlands
  • Norway
  • UK
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Belgium
  • Austria
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Germany
  • Luxembourg
  • Switzerland
  • Iceland
  • Italy

Tesla opened its charge port design last year in a bid to make it a standard in the North American region. Tesla even named it the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for easier adoption. But it seems that this transition will take time as other manufacturers will need to make changes to their EVs and 3rd-party charging providers also need to adapt to the change.

Improved Battery Insights in Tesla Mobile App 4.19

On the other hand, Tesla mobile app version 4.19 brings some changes to how it reports the battery and charging status (reported by Not A Tesla App website).

Tesla has basically improved the visual reporting that the charging slider showed in previous versions. The battery portion that is unavailable due to cold temperatures is now shown live on the slider. The 10% vertical marks on the charging status slider are now permanently shown (previously only shown when the slider was moved).
