Tesla launches Cybertruck Foundation Series in Canada at sky-high prices

After a long wait and much anticipation, Tesla (TSLA) finally opened Cybertruck pre-orders for Canada last week.

Since the public interface of Cybertruck’s Canadian order page only took pre-orders/reservations, the actual prices of the vehicle in the country were hidden.

Some reservation holders shared screenshots of the private Cybertruck online configurator/order page for Canada that revealed the prices. However, the Cybertruck prices Tesla set in Canada didn’t get a warm response from potential customers and enthusiasts alike.

Canadian Tesla customers can only reserve a Foundation Series Cybertruck which is selling at a US$20K premium in the United States. However, it’s not clear how much premium Tesla is charging on the Cybertruck prices in Canada because the base prices were never announced for the country.

Tesla has set the price of the Cybertruck Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant at CA$137,990 and the top-end Cybertruck Tri-Motor AWD (Cyberbeast) version at CA$165,990. Both of these Tesla truck variants are only available in the Foundation Series (early production with added features and perks).

The Canadian Cybertruck configurator is showing the estimated delivery timeline of Oct – Nov 2024 for both AWD and Cyberbeast variants.

Tesla enthusiasts waiting for the Cybertruck in Canada have expressed their concern of the sky-high prices of the vechicle in their country. Across discussion forums and social media, most of these potential Cybertruck buyers in Canada are going to skip the Foundation Series and wait for the cheaper non-Foundation version.

Tesla Cybertruck prices in Canada are not comparable to the neighboring United States. According to a Canadian user on Reddit, the Cyberbeast version of the Cybertruck is going to cost around CA$200K after taxes. This is roughly US$25,000 more expensive than it’s in the United States.

The majority of potential Cybertruck buyers from Canada are willing to skip the opportunity to purchase the Foundation Series version because of the sky-high prices of the vehicle. Reservation holders waiting for the Foundation Series Cybertruck production to end and order the more affordable non-Foundation version of the truck.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced a few months ago that non-Foundation Cybertruck production will start in Q3 2024. These cheaper Cybertrucks will be first offered to the customers in the US and later on, will be shipped to Canada.

Tesla displayed a Cybertruck in Canada last year in November to an excited audience. It has been a wait of around 10 months for the Canadians to be able to place a pre-order for the EV pickup truck that’s designed radically different from tradition.
