Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has finally spoken about the upcoming and anticipated Full Self-Driving (FSD) software update version 14 (FSD v14).
On his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated that Tesla will release the next big and exponentially safer FSD v14 update in about 6 weeks.
This is an exciting bit of information from Tesla’s boss. However, it also contains a subtle message that FSD v14, contrary to the expectations, is not actually Unsupervised FSD. We’ll discuss more on this below, but let’s focus on the main message that Musk gave and its impact.
Responding to an X post about Grok AI and Tesla vehicles constantly nagging users for FSD-related safety, Musk responded:
The FSD release in about 6 weeks will be a dramatic gain with a 10X higher parameter count and many other improvements. It’s going through training & testing now.
Once we confirm real-world safety of FSD 14, which we think will be amazing, the car will nag you much less.
The next big Tesla FSD release (v14) is currently under testing by the tech & AI-based automaker‘s employees. This upgraded version is also being used on a limited number of Robtoaxi vehicles currently in operation in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area.
According to Musk, since this new FSD software update is significantly better at safety measures, it’s going to reduce the number of nags for the person sitting in the driver’s seat. Tesla owners who will get this update are going to experience the same level of autonomous driving as Tesla Robotaxis.
Expected Schedule
Elon Musk made this announcement yesterday evening, so the start of FSD v14 rollout to the early access group should be expected in the last week of September, and the wide release should happen from mid-November to Christmas holidays.
However, Musk used the word “about” before 6 weeks. Technical hurdles, safety issues, and results from internal testing data can delay the rollout of FSD v14 Supervised even further.
10X Parameters
So, what does ’10X parameters’ mean for a normal non-technological person?
In an X post last year, Musk summarized what ‘parameters’ mean in the context of self-driving AI. He endorsed the following definition of AI parameters and added some more information to it as well:
A parameter is like a setting that the AI adjusts to learn from data and make decisions. Each parameter holds a bit of information that the AI uses to understand patterns and generate outputs. The more parameters an AI model has, the more detailed and nuanced its understanding and outputs can be. Think of parameters as dials on a control panel; each one is tweaked during the AI’s training to help it get better at predicting and creating new data that looks like the original training examples.

Musk’s reply:
Yeah, so long as the information compression efficiency is held reasonably constant, a higher parameter count is a representation of how well it understands the nuances of reality.
So, with a 10X parameter count compared to the current FSD version, Tesla’s AI self-driving technology will be able to understand the varying subtle details of the real world environment. This, in turn, results in better safety and a smoother driving experience.
It’s not the first time Tesla has mentioned parameters count in an FSD update. In FSD v10 releases, Tesla used to mention each improvement and parameter increase in the release notes.
FSD v14 is not Unsupervised FSD
According to Elon Musk’s statement about the upcoming significant FSD update, FSD v14 is not going to be Unsupervised Full Self-Driving.
As the name suggests, Unsupervised FSD is not going to need human attention or intervention to drive itself. A majority of the Tesla Community thought FSD v14 would be the first version to deploy Unsupervised FSD.
However, this does not appear to be the case, according to Elon Musk. Robotaxis are driving unsupervised in Austin and SF Bay Area. But even in inside the Bay Area geofence, California law requires a human to be in the driver’s seat.
Apparently, Tesla is still a bit far from launching the real Unsupervised FSD. The timeline is actually set for 2027 by Elon Musk and interestingly, YouTuber MKBHD does not believe it either and has promised to shave his head on camera if Musk succeeds.
