Tesla Robotaxi service to go public in September, automaker acquires state-wide license to operate in Texas

Earlier this month, Tesla (TSLA) acquired the license to operate its Robotaxi service in Texas. This new permit allows the tech & AI automaker to operate outside of Austin in the entire state of Texas.

Tesla registered a new subsidiary named Tesla Robotaxi, LLC, which has been given the robotaxi service license by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR). This permit will expire exactly after 1 year on 6th August 2026. The automaker will renew it at that time, of course.

Currently, Tesla is operating its Robotaxi service to a limited number of invited users in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. However, after this new license, Tesla would expand its geofenced operations to other cities in Texas.

In the meantime, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a big announcement that the Robotaxi service will open for the public next month (September 2025).

This is very interesting and big news for people who want to experience autonomous pick-up and drop-off in Austin and the SF Bay Area.

If you happen to be in one of these locations, you just need to have the Tesla mobile app to hail your Tesla Robotaxi after the service access is opened by the automaker next month.

Tesla has secured the license to operate the Robotaxi service in the entire state of Texas. However, it will take time to expand to other cities as the automaker needs to create geofenced areas and perform extensive testing before launch.

From Elon Musk’s announcement on X, it’s imminent that Tesla is preparing to scale the Robotaxi service in Austin and the SF Bay Area. The automaker should expect a large number of people wanting to avail the service in these cities.

In Austin, there is a Tesla safety person sitting in the Robotaxi front passenger seat at all times. In San Francisco, California law requires a person to be present in the driver’s seat until Tesla obtains the next permit.

Offering Robotaxi service to a larger group of users will also burden Tesla with safety personnel. However, the EV automaker has no shortage of the new Tesla Model Y Robotaxi vehicles.
