Tesla has started clearing more land area at its Gigafactory in Berlin-Brandenburg to make room to begin the construction of new buildings in the near future.

According to a German news outlet MOZ, the tree felling work at the dense Grünheide pine plantation started today.

Local observer Tobias Lindh says that Tesla does not require any more permits to clear additional land areas at Giga Berlin.

However, according to rbb24, Tesla currently plans to clear 70 hectares (~173 acres) of land for the plans the automaker has in the pipeline for the next developments (watch the latest aerial footage below).

This preparation of land is for the 2nd phase of Giga Berlin construction. Multiple buildings of the 1st phase are still under construction even after Tesla Model Y production has gained significant momentum at the factory already.

This new land area clearance is going to happen on the Northern side of Giga Berlin. MOZ reports that this tree felling and land clearance work is targeted to be completed within a week.

In the meantime, Tesla is preparing its paperwork to apply for permits and permissions to start new building constructions in the phase 2 area of Giga Berlin.

Historically, tree felling at Grunheide has been a matter of concern for environmentalists. But Tesla has most probably sorted it out by re-foresting the areas around the factory once the building construction and plumbing are in place. So far, Tesla has reportedly re-forested 300 hectares (~741 acres) of land around and near Giga Berlin.

“I am pleased that Tesla is continuing. This is a good sign: Tesla is focusing on Brandenburg. Our country is developing into a place of modern mobility. As the largest industrial employer and trainer in Brandenburg, Tesla has played a decisive role in this,” Jörg Steinbach the Minister for Economy, Labor, and Energy of the State of Brandenburg issued a statement on Twitter today.

During the Q3 2022 Earnings Call last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Giga Berlin has reached a production rate of 2,000 Model Y electric SUVs per week and is steadily ramping up even more. This was a rapid increment from the rate of 1,000 Model Ys produced per week which Tesla announced back in June.

7,000 people are currently employed at Giga Berlin and as phase 1 construction completes it’s expected to have 12,000 engineers and workers employed in it. The expansion to phase 2 will bring in more job opportunities for the residents of Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany, and Europe.
