Tesla (TSLA) introduced the new Model 3 Performance (Ludicrous) in the entire global market last week.
Along with boosting the performance specs of the car, Tesla also made visible changes to both the interior and exterior of the new Model 3 Performance. These new design changes make the Performance version discernible not just to the previous generation but to the other two Highland variants as well.
Tesla made these changes to accomplish two goals. To make Model 3 Performance stand out among the non-performance variants with a distinct look. And to further optimize the vehicle’s design for better aerodynamics, comfort, and acceleration.
Let’s go over the changes Tesla Made to the new Model 3 Performance one by one.
Exterior
Tesla kept the side profile of the Model 3 Performance consistent across all three variants (RWD, Long Range AWD, Performance/Ludicrous). The changes appear mainly on the front and rear fascia of the Model 3 Performance compared to other variants.
Wheels
Tesla Model 3 Performance comes with 20″ Warp Wheels. These larger and sportier wheels are included in the price of the vehicle.
Tesla Model 3 RWD and Long Range versions come with 18″ Photon Wheels fitted from the factory. It costs an extra $2,000 to upgrade them to the 19″ Nova Wheels.
The 20-inch Warp Wheels of the Tesla Model 3 Performance have the aero covers pre-installed. These covers can be removed for a better look. Removing aero covers affects the vehicle’s range because of the impact on its aerodynamics.
Front Fascia
Tesla redesigned the front fascia of the new Model 3 Performance to give it a sportier look and improve its aerodynamics. Compared to the more flat design of the RWD and Long Range variants, the Performance version comes with a bold front bumper design.
Tesla opened two stylishly designed air vents on the sides of the front bumper to cool down the performance brakes. The front air intake of the bumper is also opened downwards supplemented by a front carbon fiber diffuser.
I’ve recorded the following short clip of Tesla’s Model 3 configurator to demonstrate the visual differences between the front fascia design of the Performance and the other two variants.
Rear Fascia
Tesla added a carbon fiber spoiler on the trunk of the new Model 3 Performance. The automaker also redesigned the rear diffuser for the top-end performance variant as well.
Exclusive to Model 3 Performance, the redesigned front and rear fascias, rear diffuser and carbon fiber spoiler give a unique look, and work together to optimize high-speed stability.
Interior
Tesla made upgrades and design changes to the interior of the design-refreshed Model 3 Performance necessary to make it look sportier and to increase comfort during intense driving situations.
Sport Seats
Tesla has designed the new Sport Seats for the Model 3 Performance with both comfort and safety in mind. The automaker introduced similar seats for the Model S Plaid earlier this month. Interestingly, these seats have the Ludicrous Mode graphics embedded into them. According to Musk, Plaid is the fastest speed and Ludicrous is on the 2nd position.
Tesla explains the Sport Seats feature as:
All-new seat design with enhanced side and cushion bolsters hold you in place, while ventilation keeps you cool.
Carbon Fiber Dashboard
Tesla added carbon fiber accents to the new Model 3 Performance dashboard. Again, to add the sport vibe to the vehicle. While driving the performance variant, a Tesla owner should feel that he’s driving a purpose-built car, not just an upgraded version with a shoved-off 0-60 mph figure.
The lightweight carbon fiber décor and refined weave pattern is unique to Model 3 Performance.
