Tesla introduces Sport Seats for Model S Plaid designed for high G-force cornering

Tesla (TSLA) introduced newly designed seats for the Plaid variant of the Model S sedan earlier this week.

These new seats now come standard on the Tesla Model S Plaid version of the electric automaker’s flagship car. Since this is the performance version of the vehicle, Tesla has tailored the new Plaid seats with race track-level comfort in mind.

Tesla calls the new Model S Plaid seats “Sport Seats”. As we have mentioned before, Tesla is offering these new seats as ‘Standard’ on the Model S Plaid. Interestingly, the automaker did not raise the price of the Model S Plaid variant after introducing the new and improved Sport Seats.

In the email that I received from Tesla for the announcement of the Tesla Model S Plaid Sport Seats, the automaker states that these new seats are “inspired by the racetrack”. Tesla’s email highlights some interesting characteristics of the new seats as:

Inspired by the racetrack—designed for spirited driving without compromising comfort. Sport Seats now come standard in Model S Plaid, featuring track-inspired bolsters with vegan suede inserts for increased lateral support. Our updated seat architecture still enables heating, ventilation, and 12-way power adjustment, so you’ll be comfortable wherever you drive.

Although Tesla has featured the new Model S Plaid Sport Seats in the ‘Black and White’ interior option in promotional photos and videos, it comes with the included ‘Black’ and premium ‘Cream’ interior options as well. However, the Black and White is my favorite.

The base Tesla Model S Long Range AWD still comes with the original seats. I have created the following video clip that shows the difference between the new Sport Seats for the Plaid variant and the base version seats. It’s worth noting that when buying a Tesla Model S Plaid, there is no option of getting the older seats, the new Sport Seats are the only ones you get now.

Tesla further described the characteristics of the new Model S Plaid Sport Seats:

  • If you know what high-G cornering means, these seats are for you
  • Increased lateral support
  • Modular seat architecture for comfort & support, plus the same 12-way power adjust, heating & ventilation
  • High-performance suede for increased grip & reduced weight

The new refined seats for the Tesla Model S Plaid are designed to keep the driver and the passenger more comfortable and gripped in high-speed situations like track racing. When the G-force is at its peak while pushing a sub-2.0s car to its limits — the seats need to hold the occupants in the best way possible for safety and comfort.

The new Model S Plaid seats also look like they have borrowed some creative ideas from the SpaceX Crew Dragon. It has always been Elon Musk’s dream to bring a spaceship-like vibe to the interior of Tesla cars. The automaker has been somewhat successful at that with its super minimalistic design but with the new Plaid Sport Seats, the design language looks more spaceship-oriented.
