Tesla Cybertruck starts at $60,990 — the AWD variant might qualify for the Federal Tax Credit

Tesla (TSLA) and its CEO Elon Musk revealed everything about the Cybertruck that should been unveiled yesterday. Several of the important updates and breaking news we shared in our live Cybertruck Delivery Event updates article yesterday.

Tesla enthusiasts, reservation holders, and potential customers were most excited about the pricing and detailed specifications of the Cybertruck. Tesla has finally unveiled this information.

The automaker has introduced 3 variants of the Cybertruck. A base Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), the mid-tier All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and the top-end is named the Cyberbeast (also an AWD). All 3 of these variants have different range numbers and as we can see, the RWD being a base has the least range of them all — thus the least expensive as well.

Table 1 below shows the range and pricing of all three 3 Cybertruck variants and gives us an idea of a comparison among them.

Cybertruck Federal Tax Credit

Interestingly, both the base RWD and the mid-AWD variants of the Cybertruck can qualify for the Federal EV Tax Credit. But this is bound to getting the delivery as early as possible.

Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Model X qualify for the Federal Tax Credit. Just like Model X, Tesla has smartly set the price of the Cybertruck AWD to fall below the $80K MSRP threshold.

But the biggest concern is the delivery time, the full $7,500 credit is expiring on 31st December 2023 for Tesla. The Cybertruck AWD deliveries will gain momentum in 2024 and till then the Federal Tax Credit will be halved to $3,750 or can even expire.

Cybertruck RWD deliveries are expected to begin in 2025 and getting tax credit on it is almost impossible. Check out the Tesla support website for more information on eligibility criteria. Tesla or IRS do not currently have the Cybertruck under the eligible vehicles list.

Cybertrucks delivered yesterday at the Delivery Event and till 31st August might all be top trim Cyberbeast ones which don’t qualify for the Federal EV Tax Credit because of their above $80K price tag ($99,990).

Cybertruck Variants

To get the most affordable Cybertruck RWD version, you have to wait around 2 years. As we can see the estimated delivery year is 2025 in Tesla’s online car configurator. With a 250-mile range, the base Tesla Cybertruck is a bargain between range and pricing but lacks the signature Tesla performance.

The mid-tier Cybertruck AWD trim though is the most attractive on a price, range, and performance-parity basis. For the price tag of $79,990 — it’s the perfect combination of range and performance for most of the potential buyers of the truck. Although many think its price is a bit on the higher side, historically, Tesla vehicles tend to get cheaper as production ramps up. So, whoever waits will get the Cybertruck at a lower cost, improved quality, and increased features. Early adopters have to pay the highest price for being one.

Cyberbeast is for the ultimate Cybertruck enthusiasts who want to use it for drag racing and put sports cars to shame. A 0-60 mph figure of 2.6s equals a Lamborghini Huracan or an older Tesla Model S P90D Ludicrous.

Elon Musk even showed Tesla Cybertruck defeating a Porsche 911 in a drag race during yesterday’s Cybertruck Delivery Event presentation. The Cybertruck (Cyberbreast AWD) defeated the Porsche 911 while towing another 911 on the dragstrip (video below).
