Tesla (TSLA) started rolling out the long-awaited Actually Smart Summon (ASS) feature in the OTA update version 2024.27.20 yesterday.

The automaker released this feature to a very limited number of non-employee Tesla owners. Most of these owners belong to the original early access beta testers — who have a proven track record of responsibly handling new features.

The Actually Smart Summon feature update 2024.27.20 is part of the FSD Supervised v12.5.3 software update. However, the talk of the town right now is Tesla’s new feature — Actually Smart Summon (ASS).

In November 2022, Tesla CEO and Technoking Elon Musk said that Actually Smart Summon is probably coming next month (Dec 2022). After almost 2 years of tiring wait, Tesla has finally deployed this feature to its customers.

Like FSD Supervised, Tesla deems the vehicle owner responsible for when the car is performing the new summon feature. Tesla Actually Smart Summon is meant to be used in parking lots and driveways only.

There is a simple version of this feature called Dumb Summon which only moves the vehicle forward and reverse in a straight line. This feature is still useful in situations like when a Tesla owner summoned his Model Y in a flood and for people with certain disabilities.

However, the new Actually Smart Summon can navigate through fairly complex parking lots and similar spaces. This is a convenience for Tesla owners calling their cars to them in a parking lot after shopping for groceries, etc.

Tesla published the details, safety precautions, and how to use the feature in the 2024.27.20 (FSD v12.5.3) update release notes (read below).

As of this writing, only 1 out of more than 20K Tesla vehicles registered on TeslaFi.com has reported getting this update. This is how limited it is as of now.

Tesla Actually Smart Summon Release Notes (2024.27.20)

Buckle up for the ride of your life, except, surprise! You’re not in the car. ASS (Actually Smart Summon) allows your vehicle to come to you, or head to a spot that you choose, all on its own. It’s like magic, but with more tech and less wand-waving.

Additionally, Dumb Summon allows you to move your Tesla forward or back with simple controls directly in your mobile app.

To use, open your Tesla app, hit the Summon tab, and get a live feed from your car’s cameras to guide your supervision.

  • COME TO ME: Press and hold to have your Tesla come to you.
  • GO TO TARGET: Set where you want your Tesla to go, then press and hold to send it on its merry way.

You can halt your journey anytime by just letting go of the button. See your Owner’s Manual for additional details.

ASS and Dumb Summon should only be used in parking lots or driveways. Keep an eye on your car and its surroundings at all times. Stay vigilant, especially around the fast and the furious (people, bikes, and other cars). You are still responsible for your vehicle, so watch as it drives and stop it if necessary.

Note: ASS requires the Tesla mobile app version 4.36.6 or later.
