Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and real-world self-driving AI company Tesla (TSLA) shared an update on the status of its Cybercab robotaxi launch preparations in Texase and California in June.
Two days after the TSLA Q1 2025 Earnings Call, the automaker released a short video showing its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised technology performing ride-hailing services.
According to the automaker, FSD Supervised ride-hailing is currently being tested by internal employees in the San Francisco Bay Area, California and Austin, Texas.
San Francisco and Los Angeles are the most densely populated cities in California in terms of the number of Teslas. Austin, Texas on the other hand, is home to Giga Texas and the company’s global headquarters.
According to Tesla, it has already completed cumulatively 1.5k trips and 15k miles of FSD Supervised ride-hailing journeys in both of these cities. “We’ve completed over 1.5k trips & 15k miles of driving,” Tesla wrote on X.
Since this internal service is still FSD ‘Supervised’, there is a safety driver present in the ride-hailing vehicle’s driver seat. This setting allows for human intervention when needed. “FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous,” reads the notice on the video’s screen.
“FSD Supervised ride-hailing service is live for an early set of employees in Austin & San Francisco Bay Area,” Tesla wrote on Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Tesla also showed glimpses of its ride-hailing mobile app’s interface in this video. The automaker is testing and validating self-driving features in these two locations to prepare for the upcoming autonomous ride-sharing service (planned for June 2025).
Interestingly, Elon Musk commented on the following video. “Getting ready for unsupervised self-driving,” he wrote on X.
Tesla already has heaps of Autopilot video and driving dynamics data from California for its neural net AI vision training. Tesla vehicles are relatively new in Texas and has a lower population compared to California. So, more training might be needed in Texas to launch the robotaxi service.
The auotmaker is most probably going to start autonomous ride-hailing services in Austin and San Francisco Bay Area using the Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) capable Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
Tesla did not reveal which version of the FSD Supervised software these test vehicles are using. The last update non-employees received was FSD v13.2.8. It has been almost 2 months without a new major FSD update for Tesla owners in North America and China.
It’s possible that these vehicles are already using the FSD v14 update for ride-hailing testing and validation. FSD v14 is touted to be the first installment of Unsupervised FSD.
