Here’s how to get around the Tesla Robotaxi pickup location bug

Early Access riders of the Tesla Robotaxi in Austin, Texas and now San Francisco are facing small issues with the service sometimes.

Bugs and minor problems are expected as the Tesla Robotaxi service is in its early stage of customer testing.

The automaker is currently using the existing Tesla mobile app for Robotaxi service pick-up and drop-off, which has made the app more complex. Ultimately, Tesla will release a dedicated Robotaxi app as the service expands to general users.

Tesla influencer, FSD beta tester, and Early Access Group member Chuck Cook recently faced a pickup location issue while calling a Robotaxi to go from the San Francisco airport to Union Square. The closest pickup point Chuck was able to find was at a 10-minute walk.

The Tesla mobile app allows you to select a Robotaxi pickup location by dropping the pin at a pre-defined spot (video below). However, this time Chuck faced the issue that the pickup point was at a 10-minute walking distance.

Some Tesla Robotaxi users, other than Chuck Cook, also experienced the same bug when the app wouldn’t allow them to pinpoint a pickup location nearby.

Tesla owner and my friend from Austin, Texas, Gail Alar, also encountered the same issue. She resolved this problem by simply changing her location a bit, refreshing the app, and making another request.

“I walked around a little bit and refreshed the app to redo the request again, and it turned out fine,” she posted on X.

Although it was one of the top comments on Chuck’s post on X, he probably didn’t read it in time and had already hired a taxi to leave the San Francisco airport.

As of this writing, the Tesla app version on the Apple App Store is 4.47.5 and on the Android Play Store it’s 4.47.0-3435. This pickup location bug appears sporadically, depending on the location and is not consistent with the entire geofence.

Tesla is most probably going to soon address this bug/issue and fix it in an upcoming update to the Tesla app.
