Tesla Semi battery pack sizes revealed in a California regulatory filing

After years of debate on Tesla Semi’s range in real-world applications, the secret about its battery pack size is finally revealed.

Since its unveiling in 2017, Tesla has been reluctant to talk about the exact capacity of the Semi’s battery pack. Tesla offers two variants of its Class 8 electric semi-truck: a 500-mile-range and a 300-mile-range.

The exact capacities of both battery sizes have been revealed in a regulatory filing by Tesla (TSLA) with the California Air Resources Board (details below).

In one of our recent reports on the Tesla Semi, we estimated the capacity of the 500-mile battery pack at around 850 kWh. Interestingly, this estimate was very close to what the public filing reveals about Tesla Semi’s battery specifications.

Tesla Semi Battery Size and Specifications

The exact usable capacity of the Tesla Semi Long Range (500-mile version) battery is 822.029 kWh, and the Standard 300-mile variant has a 548.09 kWh battery pack installed in it.

The wording ‘usable’ is important here, as the actual battery capacity might be slightly more. Usable capacity refers to the maximum percent a battery can be charged to keep the health of the battery in optimal condition throughout its lifecycle.

The regulatory filing with the California Air Resources Board doesn’t just reveal the capacities of both versions of the Tesla Semi, it also reveals its chemistry.

Tesla has used NCMA (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Aluminum) batteries in the Tesla Semi with the 4680 form-factor cells.

The electric automaker has recently started volume production of the Tesla Semi at its Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. So, the battery pack information revealed in the filing is particularly interesting for the electric truck’s potential customers.
