Yesterday, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) announced its 2026 third-quarter financial results, and CEO Elon Musk and his team held the earnings call.
As always, Tesla’s Q3 2026 financial update deck includes interesting data points that help evaluate the company’s trajectory (PDF below).
75% FSD Attach Rate
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) AI vision software is increasingly becoming a sales driver for the company’s electric vehicles.
The automaker shared a surprising, critical metric from Q3 2026: 75% of all new Tesla car buyers in North America (mainly the US & Canada) are opting for FSD.
This is the start of a staggering shift in consumer behavior. This data point suggests new car buyers are now increasingly considering AI-based driver assistance or fully autonomous features when making a purchase decision.
In the Q2 2026 update, Tesla reported an increasing number of new owners opting for FSD. However, a 75% attachment rate is far more than Wall Street expected.
“The biggest driver for demand is Full Self-Driving, and today, there’s really no competitor for FSD in any product that you can buy,” Elon Musk said in his opening remarks of the Q3 2025 Tesla earnings call.
Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja confirmed during the call that the FSD attachment rate increased about 20% compared to Q2 2026.
Tesla wrote in its Q3 report:
FSD (Supervised) attach rate continued to grow, reaching over 75% of new vehicle deliveries in North America – our most mature market – a nearly twenty percentage point sequential increase. We believe that FSD is driving demand in markets where it is available, and we continue to work with regulators to get it approved in other markets.
Financial Highlights
Tesla’s total revenue stood at $28.046 billion in Q3 2026. This is a 0.17% decline compared to the same quarter last year (Q3 2025: $28.095 billion).
Year over year (YoY) in Q3 2026, Tesla’s gross profit rose from $5.05 billion to $5.494 billion (9% growth). Notably, Tesla increased gross profit while overall revenue fell YoY in Q3.
This profit increase is driven by a substantial rise in Tesla’s ‘Total GAAP gross margin’, which rose from 18.0% to 19.6% (160 bp) YoY.
Revenue Breakdown
Tesla (TSLA) has the following three main revenue streams:
- Automotive Revenues
- Energy generation and storage revenue (industrial-grade battery packs and home energy storage and deployment)
- Services and other revenue (regulatory credits, FSD subscriptions, Superchargers)
Automotive revenue comes solely from vehicle sales. Tesla sold 486,532 electric vehicles in Q3 2026, generating $20.056 billion in revenue. Compared to Q3 2025, this is a 3% decline (see Financial Summary sheet below).
Compared with the previous quarter, the electric carmaker also made little progress in automotive revenue (Q2 2026 vs. Q3 2026: $20.516B vs. $20.056B).
Tesla’s Energy business revenue fell 16% YoY and 8% QoQ in Q3 2026. Tesla generated $2.881 billion in revenue from its energy storage and deployment segment in Q3 2026.
The most interesting segment of Tesla’s Q3 2026 revenue is ‘Services and other’, which grew 33% YoY.
This revenue stream saw significant growth in the third quarter despite a sharp decline in regulatory credits. In Q3 2026, Tesla earned only $147 million from EV regulatory credits, down from $417 million in Q3 2025.
Tesla’s regulatory credit revenue has been declining every quarter since Q4 2025 because European manufacturers are increasing compliance with the EU’s EV policies.

Revenue from FSD Subscriptions
Tesla (TSLA) reports combined revenue under ‘Services and other,’ which includes regulatory credits, Supercharging, and Full Self-Driving subscriptions.
As regulatory credits have declined, the services segment’s revenue increase can largely be attributed to FSD monthly subscriptions.
Tesla discontinued the outright purchase of FSD earlier this year. This has enabled the automaker to unlock recurring revenue from FSD subscribers worldwide (now available in 9 European countries as well).
According to Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja during the call, FSD subscriptions and overall FSD attachment rose to 50% in Q3 2026.
What this means is that currently, 50% of Tesla owners in North America have the lifetime FSD package on their cars. The other half of the total 75% is on FSD subscriptions to use the supervised self-driving AI technology.
