Elon Musk’s keynote presentation at this year’s Tesla (TSLA) Annual Shareholder Meeting was packed with a ton of information that’s valuable to its product owners and investors.
Some of it, as he mentioned in his opening remarks, he shouldn’t have uttered, but that’s what keeps everyone engaged and excited about Tesla’s future.
When Musk started talking about Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) AI technology, he gave out some interesting bits regarding the current version, i.e., FSD v14.
“We’re actually getting to the point where we almost feel comfortable allowing people to text and drive,” Elon Musk said. “Because really, that’s what people want to do,” he added.

The latest installments of FSD v14 (v14.1.4 and v14.1.5) don’t allow users and beta testers to use their phones for texting. Tesla FSD constantly monitors the driver’s hands. If the driver is using a handheld device, the vehicle will issue a warning and ultimately disable FSD Autopilot.
However, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, this scenario is changing as the FSD system is getting better each day. The ‘texting while driving’ FSD feature is expected to be available in Tesla vehicles around the Christmas holidays.
But there is a slight issue that might cause a delay in releasing this feature. Musk said that Tesla is going to look at safety statistics before allowing FSD v14 (Supervised) users to use their phones for texting while the vehicle is driven on Autopilot.
Musk explained that allowing texting while driving on Autopilot is because people turn off FSD, then text, and turn it back on. This behavior is “less safe,” Musk pressed.
And right now, you know the version’s [FSD v14], you know the car’s a little strict about keeping your eyes on the road. But I am confident that in the next month or two, we’re gonna closely look at the safety statistics, but we will allow you to, um, text and drive essentially.
