Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is rapidly increasing the number of Cybercab robotaxis in Texas. At the same time, the autonomous ride-hailing company and EV manufacturer has halted the rollout of Model Y Robotaxis in the Lone Star State.
By the end of September, only 126 Cybercab units were operating in Austin, Texas, under the Tesla Robotaxi Service, while there were 420 Model Y Robotaxis.
In the last two weeks, Tesla has suddenly increased the number of registered Cybercabs in Texas, while the number of Model Y Robotaxis has been paused at 420. Tesla is likely keeping this number because of its historical significance to the company and Elon Musk.
As of this writing (10/12/2026), the automaker has registered 319 Tesla Cybercabs in Texas. This brings the total number of autonomous cars operating via the Tesla Robotaxi app in Texas to 739 units (source: https://texasavtracker.com/tesla).
Austin is currently the only city in the United States where Tesla uses the Cybercab for autonomous ride-hailing service. In other cities, only Model Y Robotaxis are currently in operation.
“Floodgates are opening,” Tesla stated in an official X post on Friday. The automaker said this in response to a fan’s post showing multiple Cybercabs on an Austin street.

Tesla’s official statement reveals that the automaker is now actively scaling the Cybercab numbers, at least in Austin for now.
Last month, a large number of Cybercabs were spotted in Houston, which possibly is the next city where Tesla plans to roll out Cybercabs for its robotaxi service.
The following graph shows the sudden rise in Cybercab numbers in Texas. Tesla will likely limit the number of Model Y Robotaxis in each city because most customers travel alone or in pairs. There’s a limited need for 4 or 5 passengers.
