Tesla has issued a recall for some of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles being affected by the loose brake caliper issue. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially published the recall (21V387000).

According to the NHTSA, the total number of Model 3 and Y vehicles affected with this issue are 5,974.

Summary

Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Model 3 and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles. The brake caliper bolts may be loose, allowing the brake caliper to separate and contact the wheel rim.

Remedy

Tesla Service will inspect and tighten, or replace the caliper bolts as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for owner notification. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-21-33-002.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

The details above show that this is not a widespread issue and has only affected a fraction of the Model 3 and Model Y cars. The Tesla Fremont factory alone produces more than 5,000 units of Model 3 and Model Y per week.

Model 3 and Y owners can check if their car is affected by this recall by entering their vehicle’s VIN on the Tesla official recall search web page.
