After rolling back the buggy FSD Beta update version 10.3, Tesla has released version 10.4 (firmware: 2021.36.8.5) yesterday. In the release notes of this software update (below), Tesla claims that it has made safety improvements in multiple areas and for various scenarios.
In FSD Beta 10.4, Tesla has deepened its focus on VRU (vulnerable road user) detection along with stationary and high-speed object detection. Tesla has further trained its neural net for better emergency vehicle detection as well.
Tesla has also improved the driving visualizations in the v10.4 update, now the Autopilot FSD Beta can also show speed bumps on the screen.
FSD Beta testers have also received the Sentry Mode Live Camera Access on mobile app feature with this update.
FSD Beta 10.4 Release Notes (2021.36.8.5)
Tesla has brought a new change to the FSD Beta release notes this time, the exact percentage of improvement for a specific feature is also mentioned. This information will keep the world more informed on the scale achievements Tesla is making towards Full Self Driving.
- Improved handling when driving off navigation route by allowing better recovery, when safe to do so.
- Improved handling and detection of high-speed objects when crossing high-speed roads. Enabled faster acceleration across high-speed roads.
- Improved speed through narrow spaces surrounded by high obstacles.
- Improved static obstacle control by upreving the generalized static object network with hyperparameter tuning and improvements for oversampling strategies (+1.5% precision, +7.0% recall).
- Improved VRU (vulnerable road user) detection (e.g. pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists) by adding data from next generation autolabeler (precision +35%, recall +20%).
- Improved emergency vehicle detection network by adding new data and improved training regime (pass rate +5.8%).
- Improved VRU control relevance attribute by adding navigation route as input to object detection network (accuracy +1.1%).
- Press the “Video Record” button on the top bar UI to share your feedback. When pressed, your vehicle’s external cameras will share a short VIN-associated Autopilot snapshot with the Tesla engineering team to help make improvements to FSD. You will not be able to view the clip.
Test Drive Videos
Tesla owners enrolled in the Early Access Program started getting this update yesterday. And since several of these are YouTubers as well, we don’t have a short supply of tesla videos and analysis of FSD Beta 10.4.
James Locke is one of the FSD beta testers from the start and regularly posts his experience on his YouTube channel. As soon as he downloaded version 10.4, he took his car for a spin to test new improvements.
Can see improvement with left-turn approach speed with FSD Beta 10.4. Much smoother in the actions and performance.
Also, see an improvement in the unprotected left turn at the end of the video.
Still seeing the issue with getting into the right turn lanes and making an efficient right turn onto Plum Canyon Road at the beginning of the video but that will come with time.

In the next video, we can witness that Autopilot is actually moving faster but with more confidence. The beta tester’s Tesla Model 3 was actually able to detect the sliding metal gate, the car stopped for it and waited for it to open enough before making the forward move.
These are pretty early tests of FSD Beta 10.4 and more scenarios will be tested in the coming days and weeks.
Navigating city streets has been the hardest problem that Tesla has faced yet, the company’s CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged this hurdle several times. However, improvements are coming along slowly but consistently.
