The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released the names and detailed safety ratings for cars the organization found best for 2022. IIHS selected 65 cars this year for its Top Safety Pick+ award. Another 36 cars were given the lower-tier Top Safety Pick award (without the “+” sign).

Both Tesla Model 3 and Model Y made it to the top ranks in their respective segments. Tesla Model 3 joined the Top Safety Pick+ in the “Midsize Luxury Cars” segment while Tesla Model Y was one of the best in the “Midsize Luxury SUVs” division.

Tesla Model 3 is one of the safest production cars ever made and with the IIHS testing for 2022, Tesla Model Y even surpassed Model 3 in crashworthiness.

Model Y Different Headlight Versions

IIHS has revealed that there are two different variants of Tesla Model Y headlights. The top-end Performance variant has the LED Projector (Matrix) headlights and the Long Range AWD Model Y has the LED Reflector headlights.

So, both of these headlight versions have earned a different safety rating from the IIHS. The Model Y Performance LED Projector headlights scored a Good (G) rating and the Model Y Long Range AWD LED Reflector lights got the rating of Acceptable (A) only.

According to the IIHS report, the Model Y Long Range headlight variant has some glare, which has become the reason for its lower safety ratings.

Model Y Long Range LED Reflector headlights along with the Child Seat Anchors (also “A” rating) have been the weak link in the overall safety ratings by the IIHS.

IIHS considered headlight performance a major factory in calculating safety ratings this year. All trim levels of Tesla Model 3 have the LED Projector lights so it earned a Good (G) rating in this segment overall.
