Classic electric Porsche with a Tesla motor gives tough time to Porsche 911 GTS in a drag racing battle

Porsche engineers in the 60s would never have thought that the cars they are making will be retrofitted with an electric drivetrain one day — and even compete with its own future model. But this has become a reality today.

The automotive YouTube channel Carwow has put two Porsche 911s against each other in a drag racing battle. But one of them (the old 911) has its engine removed and has an electric motor instead.

This electric motor is sourced from none other than a Tesla car (probably a salvaged one). Tesla is undeniably a challenge for Porsche in the 21st century because the US electric automaker has put traditional carmakers on their knees when it comes to race track performance.

Porsche made the Taycan EV sports car to rival Tesla in the new age but the car failed miserably in EPA range tests.

Richard and his team at Electric Classic Cars / YouTube converts old classic cars from internal combustion engine (ICE) to EVs. This 1973 Porsche 911 has a Tesla motor installed in the rear (in place of the engine).

However, Richard never mentioned from which Tesla car he imported the specific motor installed in this classic Porsche 911.

There are at least 3 generations of motors that Tesla has produced.

  • Gen 1 (2012 to 2019): first appeared in the early Model S and Model X.
  • Gen 2 (2017 to 2020): also called the Raven drive units that first appeared in Tesla Model 3 cars.
  • Gen 3 (2021 to present): first appeared in Tesla Model S Plaid, these motors are first carbon-sleeved motors used in an electric vehicle.

Thanks to this Tesla drive unit (motor) and the electric battery that gave this old Porsche 911 RS the power to compete against a new Porsche 911 GTS.

This old classic has now been renamed to Porsche 911 Carrera RS EV. It produces 450 horsepower and 400 Nm of instant electric torque.

The new 911 GTS has slightly better performance specs with 480 hp and 570 Nm of torque.

Still, the old Porsche 911 RS EV was able to beat the 911 GTS 1 out of 3 rounds of this drag racing competition. Let’s watch what happened.
