Tesla applied for a permit with the City of Austin, TX to expand and upgrade the Giga Texas paint shop last Wednesday, Oct 12th. The permit has been approved in less than a week on Monday, Oct 17th.

The above description of the permit application shows that Tesla is going to carry out some plumbing work and install new equipment in the paint shop as well. Tesla needed this upgrade as Giga Texas is ramping up production of its Model Y midsize electric SUV at this factory.
In the meantime, Tesla brought some paint shop modules and equipment to Giga Texas that can be seen in Monday’s aerial footage of the factory (video below).
This equipment was wrapped in green and white sheets and according to Joe Tegtmeyer who constantly observes Giga Texas via his drone video, most of the paint shop equipment has already been moved inside.
According to this new permit application approval, a total area of 4680 sq ft will be added to the building. This paint shop area expansion hints at a fast ramp-up of Tesla Model Y production at Giga Texas.
Tesla’s European Gigafactory in Berlin-Brandenburg reached the production rate of 1,000 Model Ys per week back in June. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Giga Texas will reach the same level of production rate towards the end of this year (2022).
Tesla’s paint shops at Giga Berlin and Giga Texas closely match each other in terms of setup and technology.
These new paint shops are more advanced compared to the older ones at Giga Shanghai and the Fremont factory because they were developed with new engineering advancements Tesla learned during their Model 3 production ramp-up and beyond.
Reportedly, Tesla is even bringing parts and machines from Germany to Giga Texas for to synchronize paint shops at both these factories on a technical level.
Tesla has secured two previous permit approvals from the City of Austin that collectively expand Giga Texas to around 1 million square feet this year alone.
The first permit acquired in June allowed the expansion of the Tesla Model Y assembly lines as Gigafactory Texas reached a production rate of 100 Model Ys per day.
Tesla acquired the other as a land-area expansion to build Elon Musk’s imaginative ecological paradise at Gigafactory Texas.
