This Holiday Season for new Tesla Model S and Model X design refresh owners has become a treat as Tesla finally delivered the much-awaited Steam video game platform integration among other features in the 2022.44.25.1 OTA software release.
With the Steam online games platform integration, Tesla Model S and Model X owners are now able to play thousands of graphic-intensive games in their cars. Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted at the Steam integration earlier this year in July.
Steam games integration brings game titles such as Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Counter Strike, Doom Eternal, Deep Rock, Forza Horizon 4 & 5, and Grand Theft Auto Five among thousands of other games.
Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce the Steam-powered games now available in Tesla vehicles. He did not miss the opportunity to commend the premium sound system in a Tesla Model S/X that enhances the in-car gameplay experience.
Elon Musk also revealed that these Steam-powered games can be played using a computer keyboard and mouse. This might be interesting to PC gamers who are not into consoles a lot.
Wired and wireless PlayStation and Xbox controllers are used as the primary way of playing games on a Tesla center touchscreen display. Our friends over at Teslarati have a nice list of wired and wireless game controllers for playing games inside your Tesla.
When asked if Elon Musk has himself played Elden Ring inside a Tesla Model S or Model X, “None yet,” Musk replied. “But I did play some Cyberpunk and it works great. Syncs with your Steam profile, so you can pick up where you left off at home,” he further tweeted.
However, many Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners are disappointed that they did not receive this upgrade to be able to play Steam games in their cars. “My disappointment is massive and my holiday is ruined,” wrote a Tesla Model 3 owner who was expecting the Steam integration to come to his car as well.
Actually, the design refresh Tesla Model S and Model X launched last year came with the AMD RDNA 2 (Ryzen) graphics processor/APU. This APU gave these cars the ability to play AAA games like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077.
However, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y also started coming off the production line with the AMD Ryzen APU in December 2021 but Tesla did not give the Steam game upgrade to these lower-end smaller vehicle lineups.
Tesla perhaps wanted to keep the Steam gameplay for their premium vehicle segment, Tesla Model S and Model X in this case. So, at least for this holiday season, Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are not getting this update.
