Tesla (TSLA) has finally opened its Supercharger charging network access to its fellow US electric vehicle company Rivian (RIVN).

In a press release yesterday, Rivian announced the availability of the Tesla Supercharger network to its vehicle owners.

In addition to Rivian’s Adventure Network, Rivian R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV owners will now have access to thousands of compatible Tesla Superchargers in the US and Canada.

Exciting news for current and future Rivian owners. Rivian vehicles now have access to the North American network of Tesla Superchargers. This adds over 15,000 compatible DC fast chargers for Rivian vehicles to charge quickly, seamlessly, and conveniently.

In 2022, Tesla opened its charge port and connector design. The US EV automaker called it the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This was an open invitation for other electric vehicle manufacturers to adopt the same charging standard and expand the EV charging availability in North America.

Last year, Ford, GM, and Rivian agreed to integrate the Tesla NACS charge port design into their future vehicles. Later on, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) also pledged to deprecate the J1772/CCS standard in North America in favor of the new, lightweight, and more efficient Tesla NACS.

Rivian explained in its official email how its R1T and R1S customers will be able to access Tesla Superchargers. Rivian will provide its customers with a J1772 to NACS adapter free of cost. Existing owners should visit their nearest Rivian store to get the adapter (ask on call in advance to avoid hassle).

What to expect

R1 owners will be eligible to receive an NACS DC adapter at no cost. Charging is as easy as pulling up and plugging in. Just like when using the Rivian Adventure Network, usage fees will be automatically charged to the credit card associated with your Rivian account.

Tesla Superchargers will appear in the R1’s vehicle navigation and within the Rivian app Trip Planner to make things as simple as possible when you’re out and about.

Rivian owners with an adapter will now have access to 15,000 and growing Tesla Supercharger stations in addition to the existing 16,000 DC fast-charging locations in North America (31,000 total and expanding).

With the abundance of charging possibilities, range anxiety is quickly becoming an obsolete term for EV owners. With Ford, GM, and Daimler (Mercedes Benz) joining the NACS standard, EV owners will have a new array of charging possibilities on their journeys.

Tesla on the other hand has now opened a new revenue stream. Tesla will be earning a cut of Rivian EV owners using paid Supercharging on their trips. Besides the money, other EV owners will be more exposed to Tesla vehicles, their features, and charging possibilities — and Tesla (TSLA) should be able to convert a percentage of them at least.
