During the Tesla (TSLA) Annual Shareholder Meeting Q & A session last week, the CEO Elon Musk gave an important update about the production timeline of the Cybertruck.
He informed investors and potential customers of the Cybertruck that Tesla will stop taking orders for the Foundation Series production very soon. To give a more solid timeline, he said that the non-Foundation Series Cybertruck production will start next quarter.
Interestingly, the next quarter starts in a few weeks when he gave this update around mid-June. This means that the Foundation Series Cybertruck production and deliveries will finally end at the end of June.
Tesla started deliveries of the Cybertruck on 30th November 2023. Since then, the electric automaker has been delivering the early-production Foundation Series Cybertrucks that cost an additional $20,000 above the normal price.
“We’ll end the Foundation Series actually pretty soon and [start] the non-Foundation series sometime next quarter,” Elon Musk gave a short answer to a question asked by an investor.
Tesla received over a million reservations for the Cybertruck when it was first revealed in 2019. Tesla selects a batch of Cybertruck reservation holders and sends them invitations to configure their Foundation Series version.
Some of these reservation holders choose to get a Cybertruck sooner than others and are willing to pay an extra $20K for early delivery and a Foundation Series badge on the truck.
After Elon Musk’s announcement of the end of Foundation Series Cybertruck orders this month, Tesla sent out invitations to a large batch of reservation holders yesterday. Many reservation holders confirmed receiving the invitation email on social media.
This seems one of the last attempts by the automaker to get as many Cybertruck Foundation Series orders as possible — after all it’s an extra $20K profit.
The price of the Dual-Motor AWD Cybertruck is $79,990 — adding the $20,000 Foundation Series premium raises the price to $99,990. Non-Foundation Series Cybertruck AWD will cost $79,990.
In the same manner, the base price of a Tri-Motor Cyberbeast is basically $99,990 but since it’s only available as Foundation Series for now, the final price of this top variant is $119,990.
Declining an invitation to order a Foundation Series Cybertruck does not result in the cancelation of the reservation. The reservation number in the queue does not change. The reservation spot remains the same and can be used to order a cheaper non-Foundation Tesla Cybertruck later.
Rumors of the end of Foundation Series Cybertruck production started circulating on social media late last month. These stories were based on the sightings of batches of Cybertrucks parked outside various Tesla Stores across the US.
However, Cybertruck Vehicle Program Manager Sidhant Awasthi confirmed that the Foundation Series production was actively going on at Giga Texas. After Elon Musk’s announcement at the Shareholder Meeting, we now have a concrete answer to the question of when the non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks will be going into production — and that is sometime in Q3 2024.
Many reservation holders have reported on X (formerly Twitter) that they are waiting for the end of the Foundation Series to order their normally-priced Cybertruck.
Elon Musk’s answer doesn’t clarify if Tesla will just start taking orders for the non-Foundation Cybertrucks or if the automaker will begin its production. If Tesla has enough Foundation Series orders on hand, the company might have to keep its production active well into Q3. In the meantime, Tesla will be accumulating orders for the non-Foundation Cybertrucks and start production end of Q3 or even into Q4.
The official Cybertruck reservation page shows estimated delivery dates of 2025 for both the Dual-Motor AWD and Tri-Motor Cyberbreast. Tesla plans to start production and deliveries of the base Cybertruck single-motor RWD version in 2026.
