Tesla (TSLA) Robotaxi app crosses 2 million downloads on its first day of launch, beats Uber and Waymo by a big margin, more

Tesla (TSLA) launched a dedicated app for its Robotaxi service yesterday. It’s currently available on the iPhone App Store. According to the automaker, the Android version will come in the future.

The most interesting thing that happened is that the Tesla Robotaxi app crossed 2 million downloads on its first day of being available on the App Store. If an Android version were available, the downloads would’ve significantly increased (Waymo and Uber comparison below).

Until yesterday, the Tesla Robotaxi service features were part of the official Tesla mobile app. However, as we predicted in our previous report, Tesla hurried to release the Robotaxi app to separate the complex processes from the main vehicle app.

The official Tesla Robotaxi account on X shared the following screenshots of the Tesla Robotaxi service app, which show its unique user interface design and features:

The first version of the Tesla Robotaxi app was 25.8.10 released on 4th September 2025. Tesla quickly released another version 25.9.0 on the same day, which is the stable and latest release as of this writing.

Having a separate Robotaxi will allow Tesla to address the bugs and issues in an isolated environment. Having a large codebase, including the main Tesla app, was a comparatively difficult task to manage for the software development team.

On the user’s end, it’s more convenient to directly install the Tesla Robotaxi app, especially for people who don’t own a Tesla vehicle yet and don’t need the extra features of the main app.

According to Tesla, downloading the Robotaxi app will enter you in the waiting list of the service in the United States. As we reported earlier, Tesla is preparing to expand access to the Robotaxi service in several US cities after its successful testing in Austin, Texas, and the SF Bay Area, California.

Tesla Robotaxi app has garnered an overall rating of 4.9 stars out of 5 on the App Store with a total of 355 reviews and ratings. Reviews of the app include early access users who have already tested the Robotaxi service.

No More Safety Drivers by the End of Year

In Austin, a safety person is present in the passenger’s seat. In the San Francisco Bay Area, regulators currently require the safety driver to be present in the driver’s seat.

However, according to Elon Musk’s statement, these safety personnel are there only for the next few months to be extra cautious with the autonomous drive in the geofenced areas.

“The safety driver is just there for the first few months to be extra safe. Should be no safety driver by end of year,” Musk wrote on X.

Tesla Robotaxi app vs Waymo and Uber

The iOS App Store data shows that the Tesla Robotaxi app was downloaded more than 2 million times on the first day of its launch.

Institutional investor Ark Invest, led by Cathie Wood, released the following comparison graph between the Tesla Robotaxi app, Uber, and Waymo.

Uber and Waymo have a long history of ride-hailing services, and Tesla has just entered the arena. On the first day of its launch, the Tesla Robotaxi app broke historical records compared to both of its competitors.

The following graph shows a monthly rolling app download history of Uber and Waymo. The Tesla Robotaxi app downloads have beaten any best day or month of both since Waymo and Uber’s launch by a big margin.

As of this writing, at around 10:40 AM Eastern Time, Tesla shares have jumped $9.3 (2.76%) compared to yesterday. Investors have realized the potential of the Tesla Robotaxi service by the popularity of the app.

Autonomous ride-hailing services are the future of transportation as declared in Tesla’s Master Plan Part IV (Sustainable Abundance).
