Tesla Cybertruck scores another top crash safety rating in 2025

The negativity around the Cybertruck was born with it — since Tesla revealed it in 2019.

Throughout the years, the automaker somehow brought it to the production phase and has sold several thousand units as well (although much lower than Elon Musk’s expectations).

Due to its stainless steel body and a large, odd, and pointy shape, critics were pessimistic about its safety. Most thought it wouldn’t pass the crash safety ratings by the authorities or independent bodies.

However, against all odds, with excellent engineering by the Tesla team, the Cybertruck received a 5-Star safety rating from the NHTSA earlier this year.

Once again, Tesla Cybertruck has earned the Top Pick+ safety score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This prestigious safety award applies to Cybertruck units produced in or after April 2025.

Cybertruck IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

A few months ago, the IIHS released a crash-test video of the Cybertruck. This video showed a 40 mph moderate driver-side overlap frontal crash test.

The IIHS just released the results of these crash tests performed inside its crash testing facility. Tesla Cybertruck scored the top rating (G: Good) in all three crash safety areas, namely:

  • Small overlap front
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side impact

For the Small and Moderate overlap tests, the IIHS performed updated tests as its website confirms.

The good thing about the IIHS safety test is that it includes testing for Headlights and Pedestrians as well. This provides an idea of how safe a vehicle is for other road users in addition to its occupants.

As we can see in the above screenshot of the IIHS Cybertruck crash safety test results, the unorthodox electric pickup truck scored a Good rating in most of the tests.

The only area it’s lacking a bit is the ‘Seat belt reminders’. Tesla can easily tweak these seatbelt safety reminders via free over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Cybertruck will score even better in the next year’s re-testing.
