QoQ and YoY Comparison: Tesla EV Sales & Energy Storage Deployment

Tesla posted a record number of vehicle deliveries in the last quarter of 2024. However, this year, the electric automaker wasn’t able to demonstrate this strong growth.

Tesla delivered 495,570 EVs in Q4 2024, and in Q4 2025, this number dropped to 418,227 units. This is a sharp decline of 15.6% year-over-year (YoY) in Q4.

In a YoY comparison of 2024 vs 2025, Tesla vehicle sales dropped around 8.6%. In 2024, Tesla sold 1,789,226 EVs, while in 2025, this number declined to 1,636,129 vehicle units.

In the energy storage and deployment business, Tesla sold 11.0 GWh of battery storage and solar in the last quarter of 2024. In Q4 2025, this number has increased to 14.2 GWh.

Tesla delivered 46.7 GWh of battery energy storage (BESS) products in 2025. In 2024, the company sold 31.4 GWh of energy storage. This is a sharp increase of 48.7%.

Taking Tesla’s Q3 2025 energy storage revenue numbers as an example, we get a per-GWh revenue of around $273.2 million. So, for 2025, with 46.7 GWh, Tesla generated a revenue of around $12.75 billion. This is an estimate; Tesla will announce the exact figures in its financial update later this month.

Why Tesla Vehicle Sales Dropped in 2025

Tesla’s vehicle sales dropped in Q4 and the Year 2025 compared to 2024. This was actually expected after what the company had gone through last year, because of Musk’s entry and exit into politics, and the end of the $7,500 EV tax credit in the United States.

Anti-Elon Musk sentiment in the US has hurt Tesla sales more than any other factor. Even some long-time Tesla fans and enthusiasts turned against the company because of Musk’s time at DOGE and political commentary on his social media platform X.

Hate against Tesla escalated so high that people started vandalizing Tesla cars and even attacked Tesla showrooms in the US.

All of these factors resulted in Tesla losing its position as a global leader in electric vehicle sales. BYD, with 2.26 million EVs sold last year, has taken the crown from Tesla to become #1 in global electric vehicle sales.
