Tesla almost achieves half a million deliveries goal in 2020 and scores its best quarter yet

Tesla (TSLA) has just released its Q4 2020 production and delivery numbers. The most interesting and exciting bit is that the automaker has achieved its goal of 0.5 million cars production and deliveries. Q4 2020 also achieved a record number of production deliveries in Tesla history.

Including the Q4 production and delivery numbers, Tesla has produced 509,737 cars this year and delivered 499,550 units. The delivery goal just fell short by 450 cars for the year but it’s a negligible number considering the COVID-19 situation and the shutdown of the Tesla factory (see tables for full numbers and Q3 comparisons).

This is a huge achievement on part of Elon Musk and his entire workforce at the Tesla Fremont factory. Elon Musk just tweeted that this was a major milestone for Tesla, “At the start of Tesla, I thought we had (optimistically) a 10% chance of surviving at all,” he recalled.

Tesla’s Q4 2020 is also a record quarter in terms of production and deliveries. Compared to Q3 2020 numbers. Comparing Q4 vs. Q3 2020 numbers (tables below) we see a ~24% growth in production while a whopping ~30% hike in overall deliveries of Model S, 3, X, and Y.

Interestingly, while giving an interview to Fox News in 2014 (video clip below), Elon Musk said that “I feel pretty confident that we will be able to achieve at least half a million cars a year by 2020”. This time Elon Musk did not miss his mark, he and his Tesla team are right no target.
