Tesla (TSLA) introduced a new premium silver paint option for its flagship Model S luxury sedan and Model X luxury SUV. The automaker has named the new color Lunar Silver.
Tesla enthusiasts have been longing for a silver color in North America for a long time, especially since the automaker introduced Quicksilver in Europe in 2022. On popular demand, Tesla added Quicksilver color to its Model Y electric SUV in the US earlier this month.
Tesla has now equipped the paint shop at its Fremont car factory to offer the Lunar Silver color for both Model S and X. The Fremont factory is the only Tesla manufacturing plant where the automaker produces Model S and Model X electric vehicles.
The new Lunar Silver paint option is available for Tesla customers around the globe. Lunar Silver for the Model S and Model X costs an additional $2,500 in the United States (refer to the table below for prices in different countries).
With the launch of the Model S/X Lunar Silver color, Tesla updated its online car configurator, its press photos archive, and also sent out emails of the announcement. The automaker described the color as:
Lunar Silver is a clean silver color with a pronounced metallic effect and subtle blue tint. By utilizing new pigments, this paint achieves a technical and dynamic feel.Tesla, Inc.
Before launching the Lunar Silver for the Model S/X yesterday, the closest color to a silver shade was the Stealth Grey paint. Stealth Grey is the color included in both of these vehicles’ base prices.
Another color having ‘silver’ in its name was the Midnight Silver Metallic. This color was deprecated by Tesla in November last year in favor of the new Stealth Grey. Midnight Silver Metallic was also closer to a grey, it wasn’t close to a true silver paint either.
Tesla used to have several Model 3 prototypes in silver color. The automaker did offer this color on early Model 3 cars for a brief period before it was replaced by the Midnight Silver Metallic. Original silver Tesla Model 3s are considered unicorns among the fleet.
After a long time, the automaker has reverted to offering true silver shades for its cars such as the Quicksilver and now Lunar Silver.
Tesla Model S and Model X generate the lowest number of sales among the Tesla vehicle lineup. Introducing attractive new paint options is an attempt by the automaker to increase their sales because these luxury segment vehicles give the highest margins.
