The strong demand for Tesla cars results in another Model 3 and Model Y price increase

Tesla has once again raised the prices of Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y cars today. We have actually lost count of how many times Tesla has increased the price this year. But hopefully, this would be the last time Tesla hikes the prices of its cars in 2021.

Prices of the new 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range and Plaid variants have stayed stable for a few months now. Just before the delivery event, Tesla hiked the price of the Model S Plaid by a staggering $10k. Later on, the base Long Range AWD Model S version also got a price increase of $10k from $79,990 to $89,990.

This sudden and unexpected increase in the prices came after Tesla reported a historic quarter with 232,025 Model 3/Y cars delivered globally.

Model 3 Price Changes (Oct 2021)

Tesla has increased the prices of two variants of the Model 3 luxury compact electric sedan, the base Standard Range Plus, and the top-end Performance versions.

Following are the new updated prices of the Tesla Model 3 variants:

  • Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus: $41,990 ($2k increase)
  • Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD: $49,990 (unchanged)
  • Tesla Model 3 Performance: $57,990 ($1k increase)

One more interesting bit I have marked with a red circle in the above screenshot from the Tesla online car configurator is the estimated delivery date of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus variant. Due to strong demand, the Model 3 SR+ deliveries are now pushed to Apr 2022 for the United States customers.

Tesla is ready to ship Model 3 Long Range variants in December and the Performance variant in November.

Next price update: Tesla has again increased the price of Model 3 and Model Y base variants in October.

Model Y Price Changes (Oct 2021)

Both of the Tesla Model Y variants (Long Range AWD & Performance) got a $1,000 price increase today. Following are the new prices of the Model Y for the United States:

  • Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD: $54,990
  • Tesla Model Y Performane: $61,990

The Tesla Model Y base variant Long Range AWD now also has an estimated delivery date of April 2022 hinting towards the high demand for the vehicle.

Since March, Tesla has raised the price of the Tesla Model Y LR AWD by $5,000. This is around a ~10% price increase in a single year.

Till April 2022, Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas will have scaled up production of the Model Y electric SUVs. As Musk noted in the Q2 2021 Earnings Call, Model Ys produced at Giga Texas and Giga Berlin will have both the front and rear single-piece underbody castings.

But it’s not clear yet if Tesla will start Giga Texas production with the Long Range AWD Model Y variant or the Performance one. Tesla has historically started factories with the top-end variants first. But the demand of the base Model Y might push the automaker to change its tradition this time.
