Last week, the President of the United States of America Joe Biden visited GM’s electric car manufacturing plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, MI. It is called Factory Zero by the US automaker. During his address to the audience at the event, POTUS appreciated the efforts made by General Motors towards vehicle electrification but he totally ignored Tesla in his comments.
Furthermore, the President said that the CEO of GM Mary Barra was the one leading the electric vehicle revolution. But in reality, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was the one who invested half of his total fortune to bring electric vehicles to the mainstream back in 2003. While GM had already destroyed all the EV1 cars it made in the 90s.
“In the auto industry, Detroit is leading the whole world in electric vehicles. You know how critical it is? Mary, I remember talking to you way back in January about the need for America to lead in electric vehicles. I can remember your dramatic announcement that by 2035, GM would be 100% electric. You Changed the whole story, Mary. You did, Mary. You electrified the entire automotive industry. I’m serious, you led, and it matters,” Joe Biden said in his speech.
“Biden’s speech was written 20 years ago, just before GM killed the electric car. His speechwriter uploaded the wrong file,” Elon Musk’s mother Maye Musk stated in a tweet.
Obviously, the lobbying efforts by General Motors have heavily paid off. President Biden also drove the upcoming Hummer EV electric pickup truck prototype at GM’s test track at Factory Zero.
“As a lot of folks know, I’m a car guy. I’ve gotten a chance to drive some pretty incredible vehicles over the years, but I never could have imagined ones like the electric vehicle I took for a spin today. The future is electric – and it will be made right here in America,” the President issued a statement on Twitter after enjoying the drive of the Hummer EV prototype.
Biden forgot that Tesla Model 3 is the world’s best-selling compact luxury sedan — ICE or electric. And Model 3 is made right here in the United States with 65% of parts sourced from within the US and Canada.
Not just this, Tesla has 3 functional giant factories in Fremont California, Sparks Nevada, Buffalo New York, and the fourth Gigafactory is on the verge of starting production in Austin, Texas.
If President Biden truly wants to promote the US-made cars and jobs created in the country, he also needs to recognize the efforts made by Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk.
GM only has one fully electric car in production and that is the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which was recently recalled by the company for battery fire issues. The Hummer EV prototype that POTUS drove is not yet in production.
President Biden most probably won’t correct his mistake in recognizing Tesla and Elon Musk but the world actually knows who is the leader in bringing electric vehicles to the mainstream.
