A prototype of the Tesla Cybertruck made rounds on the internet and social media when it was spotted in a Ford F-150 wrap in California last week.
The last time it was seen, we got just a couple of spy videos during testing and pictures taken from behind during the drive. In the latest pics taken on Wednesday, we can see a lot more detail of this Cybertruck prototype from different angles.
A Tesla enthusiast captured the moment on a California highway while the F-150-wrapped Cybertruck was loaded on a tow truck trailer. This most indicates that the testing of this specific prototype has been completed and it’s on its way back to Texas.
Besides the Ford F-150 wrap that we discussed in our last post on this Cybertruck prototype, we were able to observe more details because of better-quality images.
Tires and Wheels
Looking closely at one of the pictures which shows us the rear wheel, tire, and the back half of the Cybertruck side profile, we can observe the tire more closely.
Interestingly, when I zoomed in and applied some Photoshop brightness correction to it, the specifications of the installed tire were revealed (picture below).
This Cybertruck prototype is installed with 20-inch Goodyear Territory RT tires. The specs of the Cybertruck tire are LT285/65/R20. We can safely assume that customer Cybertrucks would come with the same tires.
Since production has already begun at Giga Texas and these tests are taking place simultaneously, it is imminent that Tesla is testing Cybertruck with production tires.
The first Cybertruck prototype that Elon Musk showed at the unveiling had much larger tires compared to these. However, those early Cybertruck tires were also provided by Goodyear but did not show any written specifications on them.
Goodyear Territory tires are specifically used for off-roading, especially driving on muddy terrains. The amount of mud present on the wheel and the wheel well shows that this Cybertruck F-150 prototype also went through off-road testing on muddy plains.
The Goodyear website states that the open-tread design of Territory MT/RT tire “helps to clear mud from the tire for traction, on or off-road”. The tire description also says that it “offers added traction in deep mud and snow,” and “reduces tread pattern noise”.
The wheels that we can see in these pictures are standard Cybertruck wheels. In the early prototypes, these wheels were hidden under a Cybertruck-themed wheel cover. Interstingly, Tesla has patented the Cybertruck wheel cover design.
Reportedly, Tesla has received around 1.9 million Cybertruck pre-orders to date. Production has begun but Tesla has not yet opened the Cybertruck online vehicle configurator. As soon as the configurator goes public, more tire sizes and wheel designs will be unveiled.
Most probably we’ll have to wait a few months for the Cybertruck configurator to go live, so stay tuned until then.
