Tesla to fix auto wiper issues with an OTA software update soon

A Tesla (TSLA) software engineer has confirmed on X (Twitter) that the automaker will soon release an over-the-air (OTA) update to fix the longstanding auto wiper issues.

Tesla vehicle owners have been complaining for a while about the unexpected behavior of the wipers when they are set to turn on/off automatically in rainy weather.

A Tesla owner posted a video of her vehicle’s automatic wipers not turning on even when it was raining and the windshield was clearly wet to the naked eye. Tesla AI Sr. Staff Engineer Yun-Ta Tsai replied to this video “The new improvement should go out soon”.

A lot of Tesla owners have been complaining about the auto wipers issue on X (Twitter) but this is the first time someone got an official reply from the company on this specific issue. From Yun’s reply, we can estimate that the Tesla auto wiper bug will be fixed in the next Tesla software update. This should be anywhere from days to a few weeks away.

Tesla vehicles don’t have any rain sensors installed. Tesa relies on its AI Vision using the car’s front cameras cameras to detect rain. If the windshield appears wet with droplets, the cameras send a signal to the car’s computer to trigger wipers in auto mode.

Due to a technical glitch in Tesla software, auto wipers are not triggered properly or at all. In some cases, Tesla owners have reported the wipers also acted weirdly and turned on in completely dry weather conditions. Tesla Vision seems to be having issues detecting rain/water droplets using the forward-facing cameras installed behind the windshield of the cars.

Tesla auto wipers were actually fixed in an old update but the bug re-appeared in one of last year’s software updates. Until the promised update rolls out, Tesla owners can turn the wipers in Manual Mode by going to the vehicle Controls menu (see video at the end of the article).

The entire vehicle fleet, i.e. Model S, Model X, Model Y, and Model 3 are affected by the auto wipers software bug. We don’t have enough data on the Cybertruck as it’s still in the hands of a few hundred customers.

Following are a few complaints Tesla owners have recently been making about their car’s auto wipers function:
