Tesla Cybertruck to get FSD v12.5 in August, wide release for HW4 vehicles starts today, says Elon Musk

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk announced good news for Tesla Full Self-Driving fans and Cybertruck owners.

The first news is that Tesla Cybertruck owners will receive the latest FSD v12.5 in August. Musk announced this during the X Takeover event where he was addressing the audience via a live video call.

The host of the X Takeover event asked “Any update on FSD for Cybertruck?”. To which Musk replied, “Well, I think that should be coming out in August”.

As Elon Musk was apparently telling the exact point release (sub-version number) for Cybertruck FSD 12.5, the host joked “technically Two Weeks?” and we couldn’t hear the exact version number (vide below). Two Weeks refers to Elon Musk’s project delivery timelines, whenever a milestone gets late, fans use this term to throw light-hearted criticism at him. Once Elon Musk promised an update after two weeks and it delayed for a long time, this gave birth to the Two Weeks meme attached to him.

It is now confirmed by Elon Musk that Cybertruck owners will finally get FSD Supervised on their electric pickup trucks in August (a sub-version of FSD v12.5). However, the update might be delayed till the end of the month as Musk laughed on hearing the Two Weeks term.

Tesla Cybertruck actually has a redesigned user interface (UI). This redesign was needed due to match the truck’s overall pointy, edgy, and low-poly design theme. This is most probably one of the factors that might be a hurdle for the software team to customize the FSD experience for Cybertrucks.

Another factor is the Cybertruck’s huge size and a radical design change of the vehicle that does not match any other Tesla. Auto-steering the Cybertruck on city streets does need custom code and AI training to make it run on Autopilot as smooth as other Teslas.

The 2nd good news for Tesla owners waiting for the FSD v.12.5 update on their vehicle is the announcement of the wide release (only HW4 vehicles for now). Elon Musk just posted on X that FSD v12.5.1 wide release will begin today (29th July).

Tesla has already started the rollout of point release FSD v12.5.1 (2024.20.15). According to Tesla software tracking website TeslaFi.com, 691 total cars out of 20,0257 data-contributing vehicles have already installed either FSD v12.5 or v12.5.1 as of this writing.

Tesla began the rollout of FSD v12.5 last week. The wide release of this version proves that the majority of testing done by employees and original group (OG) of early access external beta testers has proven to be good — hence, giving Tesla the confidence for the wide release.

Elon Musk also gave a tentative timeline of 10 days for the rollout of FSD 12.5 for Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles. Till now, Tesla has rolled out FSD v12.5 only to Hardware 4 (HW4) vehicles. In the next two weeks, HW3 vehicles will also be able to run this version as the Tesla software team will optimize the code for these slightly older vehicles with the previous generation of onboard computer.
