Tesla merges FSD v12.5.1.3 (2024.26.10) with the Summer Update production branch, goes wide release, HW3 still not in sight

Tesla (TSLA) has once again released an FSD v12.5 subversion point release v12.5.1.3 within a short span of the last version rollout.

The automaker has merged the new FSD v12.5.1.3 (firmware version 2024.26.10) with the production version software update 2024.26 (Summer Update). So, what this means is that the Tesla cars running on FSD Supervised and the ones running without it are now going to have the same features not related to Full Self-Driving.

Traditionally, FSD Supervised users lagged in terms of features and updates that non-FSD users had the chance to enjoy much before them. As you must have noticed, the FSD v12.5.1.3 firmware version number is 2024.26.10 which is a subset of the Summer Update released last month and included various new features and brought improvements to the existing ones.

So Tesla owners running their cars on FSD v12.5.1.3 are now able to get all the missing features in addition to being able to run their vehicles on FSD Supervised with the latest updates. Hopefully, in the next updates, Tesla will keep FSD Supervised users on a relevant non-FSD OTA software update branch.

It also suggests that the Tesla software team which works on non-FSD features is now completely aligned with the Autopilot AI development team. This harmony should result in even faster software update rollouts in the future. When the entire fleet is on the same branch, Teslla software update releases will become seamless.

According to Tesla software tracking data collected from around 20,000 vehicles on the TeslaFi.com website, the FSD v12.5.1.3 update has been installed on 679 vehicles (as of this writing) and 15 installations are pending.

After the FSD v12.3.6 update, FSD v12.5.1.3 is the most widely rolled out FSD update yet. Tesla has upgraded all the users running on the previous v12.5.1.1 update to the new version 12.5.1.3.

FSD 12.5 on HW3 Tesla Cars

Roughly, over 90% of Tesla vehicles with FSD Supervised in the US and Canada are currently stuck on the FSD v12.3.6 update. The majority of these Teslas are older vehicles installed with the Hardware 3 (HW3) computer.

Elon Musk announced late last month that the HW3 cars will be upgraded to FSD v12.5 (with a subversion point release) within 10 days. It has been more than 15 days since then and there is no FSD v12.5 variant available for HW3 cars still.

However, he also noted that it would take a considerable amount of effort to optimize the code for HW3 cars. Elon Musk’s estimated time to complete this optimization and validation was over-optimistic as usual.

“It takes considerable software effort to optimize the code enough to run on HW3. It also needs to be validated separately,” he wrote on X on 29th July.

There does not seem to be a solid timeline in sight when HW3 cars will get the new FSD v12.5 software versions. However, it’s clear from Elon Musk’s comments, that Tesla teams are working on it but there might be roadblocks in implementation that are driving the timeline further.

So, the newer Hardware 4 (HW4 / AI4) equipped Tesla vehicles are currently the only ones enjoying FSD v12.5 and its subversion updates.

Update: Tesla AI head has now confirmed FSD 12.5 for HW3 vehicles in the v12.5.1.4 (2024.26.15) update

  1. Can’t believe Tesla is leaving 4-5 million HW3 people hanging although he did say in the beginning AI day there was already a new generation HW in the works but never even hinted it would not work in the current generation cars. We all assumed a retrofit.
