Tesla (TSLA) opens the floodgates of a 1-month FSD trial offer for the 2nd time this year.
The automaker first offered FSD (Supervised) trials earlier this year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk also directed the sales staff to give customers a mandatory free test ride of FSD Supervised during vehicle delivery.
Tesla is offering a 30-day free trial of FSD after the Robotaxi unveiling event. It’s another debate how successful the event was — but Tesla demonstrated a sizable number of autonomous vehicles and vulnerable road users roaming inside the Warner Bros. Studios.
Eligible Tesla owners who haven’t bought FSD outright or don’t have a monthly FSD subscription are getting emails from the automaker to test the system for a month. The email starts with the words “The future is autonomous” and references the We, Robot event.
Here’s what the email reads:
The Future is Autonomous
At our We, Robot event, we unveiled the future of autonomy. Now, you can experience a part of the future for the next 30 days with a Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial in your own Tesla.
Enable Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on your vehicle’s touchscreen, enter your destination and go. Under your supervision, your Tesla will navigate for you, changing lanes and making turns while you enjoy the ride.
After toggling enable FSD Trial on the Autopilot controls screen, the above dialog box appears on the screen asking for confirmation that the user has read the following instructions and safety information (watch the video below for instructions to enable FSD trial).
Under your supervision, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can drive your Tesla almost anywhere. It will make lane changes, select forks to follow your navigation route, navigate around other vehicles and objects, and make left and right turns. You and anyone you authorize must use additional caution and remain attentive. It does not make your vehicle autonomous. Do not become complacent.
Cabin Camera is used to detect driver attentiveness while FSD (Supervised) is in-use to provide you with audible alerts, reminding you to keep your eyes on the road.
By continuing, you allow Cabin Camera (above the rearview mirror) to determine inattentiveness and remind you to keep your eyes on the road when FSD (Supervised) is active.
FSD Trial Version
Tesla owners have been reporting getting the free 1-month trial of FSD (Supervised) across social media and YouTube. However, Tesla is giving out the older FSD v12.3.6 (2024.32.7) version of FSD to trial users.
FSD v12.3.6 is the 2nd most widely released version of Tesla FSD as of now. The most widely rolled-out version is FSD 12.5.4.1 which the trial users are hoping to get upgraded to at least if not to FSD v12.5.
In contrast, at the We, Robot event, Tesla Robotaxis and Model 3/Y cars used FSD v13. This version has not yet been released publicly but is expected to roll out by the end of October. Trial users don’t seem to get v13 as they are way behind in the version queue despite Tesla referencing the Tesla Robotaxi event in the trial offer email (read above).
Tesla only offered the previous FSD Trial for owners in the United States. This time, both US and Canadian Tesla owners are getting the 1-month FSD Trial offer.
Some Tesla FSD Trial users are reporting on Reddit that their screen is showing a 2-month expiry instead of 1 month. The following screenshot shows the Tesla message of the FSD Trial upgrade and its expiry date. The same users posted that the Software Controls screen of his legacy Model S 75D also displays a date that suggests that the FSD trial is going to expire in 2 months.
Interestingly, the trial is being installed on older legacy Teslas as well. But these older vehicles might not get the FSD v12.5 and later updates that at least require HW3 hardware.
