Just before Christmas, Tesla started the rollout of a more refined FSD v13.2.2 point release update to a wider user base in the United States and Canada. Cybertruck also received this new version and we have some reviews by the beta testers to discuss.
Vulnerable road users (VRUs) account for a significant portion of safety issues for both human drivers and autonomous cars. Since Tesla has a top priority for safety while building cars and their software, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) needs to be extensively tested for scenarios involving VRUs (bikes, motorcycles, pedestrians, pets & animals, kids, etc.).
Original group (OG) FSD beta tester Chuck Cook received the FSD v13.2.2 (2024.45.25.5) update just before Christmas. This gave him a chance to introduce it to his family members and give them a few test rides during the holidays.
FSD v13.2.2 Detects a Cat Crossing the Road (VRU Scenario)
The benefit of having Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) in your vehicle is it has a 3D vision and a range that is beyond human capability. It is able to constantly look around the car with Tesla’s 8 external cameras (HW4 can support up to 11 cameras).
Tesla Autopilot has a surround 360° vision and a distance range more than humans. Although Tesla removed radar from its vehicles and later on ultrasonics as well, the tech automaker re-introduced an HD radar in HW4 vehicles last year.
While Chuck Cook was riding his Cybertruck driven on Autopilot FSD v13.2.2, the vehicle stopped on the street — for no apparent reason. On the far left in the grass, a black cat was moving across. Although the human eye didn’t see it, Autopilot detected and came to a smooth stop, it wasn’t sudden or abrupt. Chuck was amazed at this (watch below).
Interestingly, FSD 13 on-screen visualization showed the cat as a human.
FSD v13.2.2 Detects Baby Stroller/Pedestrians
In another video, where Chuck was testing the Cybertruck FSD v13.2.2 with his family members, Autopilot made an impressive move.
A VRU scenario emerged as a human pedestrian approached from the right to cross the road. It was a crosswalk as well. However, a couple with their child in the stroller was also approaching the crosswalk from the left — missed by the human eye for a moment but not Autopilot FSD.
Cybertruck patiently waits for the family to cross the road. The visualization on the screen represents humans and the stroller perfectly this time (screenshot above, video below).
