Tesla (TSLA) has achieved a historical milestone as it delivered the first-ever car in automotive history that drove itself from the factory to the customer’s location without human supervision.
As of this writing, it has been around 1 hour since Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the first Tesla Model Y electric SUV autonomously delivered itself from Gigafactory Texas to a customer in Austin, Texas.
Interestingly, the vehicle did not have a human occupant as a safety person, and the vehicle wasn’t even remotely controlled by human supervisors. What’s even more exciting is that Tesla achieved this goal a day ahead of schedule.
Tesla had two major milestones to hit this week. The automaker successfully launched the beta Robotax service in Austin, and now the self-delivery of a Tesla Model Y has also been completed smoothly.
Tesla originally planned to attempt the first autonomous customer delivery of a Model Y on 28th June. However, the automaker decided to do it one day earlier, the weekend is going to be crazy with headlines of this historic event.
Musk wrote on X:
The first fully autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y from factory to a customer home across town, including highways, was just completed a day ahead of schedule!!
Congratulations to the Tesla AI teams, both software & AI chip design!
There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.
According to the Head of Tesla AI team Ashok Elluswamy, the self-delivering Model Y reached a max speed of 72 mph (~116 km/h). An autonomous vehicle safely driving itself at 72 mph on busy city streets is a phenomenal achievement by Tesla.
Since the self-delivery Model Y was Unsupervised, Tesla might have installed an unreleased version of Unsupervised FSD on this vehicle. The automaker might roll it back once the car is delivered and the customer gets the latest version of FSD (Supervised) v13.

Maybe not supervised by someone in the car but there was surely a team closely following and filming from a chase car who for sure had a emergency stop switch.
Either this is a lie or it’s breaking the law. Either way I prefer to not have these driving around my city without supervision until we know it’s safer than human drivers. Right now we know it is in fact not as safe.
