Tesla Europe issues deadlines for one-time FSD purchase in favor of monthly subscriptions

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has announced that it’s going to end the one-time purchase of the Full Self-Driving package in Europe. The discontinuation of the outright purchase of FSD for life is going to happen this month (May 2026).

The launch of FSD (Supervised) v14 in the Netherlands has garnered a lot of attention from Tesla car owners in Europe. Dutch FSD users alone have driven their cars on Tesla FSD for 10 million kilometers (~6.2M miles) in just one month.

Interestingly, it has just been a month, and Tesla has decided to discontinue the one-time purchase option for FSD. Additionally, the more affordable Enhanced Autopilot with limited features is also going to be discontinued this month.

The one-time FSD Capability AI self-driving software package costs €7,500 in Europe. Enhanced Autopilot costs almost half at €3,800. The Enhanced Autopilot feature has already been phased out in the Netherlands after the approval and launch of FSD in the country.

The tech & AI-based electric automaker made this announcement subtly through its online car configurator for European countries. Another interesting thing is that the phase-out dates for the Tesla FSD package’s outright purchase are different in each European country.

For example, in Germany, the last date to buy the Full Self-Driving package for your Tesla is 21st May. On the other hand, in the Netherlands, where FSD is currently being used by Tesla owners, the last date to purchase FSD outright is 15th May.

Except for the Netherlands, all other European countries have the May 21 deadline to buy FSD outright.

If you read the fine print, there’s another catch. Even if you bought FSD before May 15 or May 21 (depending on your country), you need to take delivery of the vehicle before 30th June.

This specific condition applies to the customer. If, for any reason, the customer didn’t take delivery of his/her vehicle till 30th June, Tesla will remove the FSD one-time purchase from the order. Of course, the €7,500 amount will be refunded (the configurator doesn’t explicitly mention this clause).

The fine print reads as follows:

The one-time purchase of the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package is available for orders placed no later than May 15, 2026, and delivered no later than June 30, 2026.

For orders placed no later than May 15, 2026, with an estimated delivery date after June 30, 2026, the purchase is conditional upon the customer taking delivery of the vehicle on the next scheduled delivery date.

If the customer fails to take delivery of the vehicle on that date due to circumstances attributable to the customer, the purchase of the package is invalid and will be removed from the order by Tesla.

Tesla owners can try Tesla Full Self-Driving for a short period with the €99/month subscription option. European users can still buy FSD for a one-time payment of €7,500 before May 15 in the Netherlands and May 21 in the rest of Europe.

In the Q1 2026 Earnings Call, Tesla disclosed that the number of paid FSD users globally has reached 1.3 million users. The majority of these are subscription-based users. Despite discontinuation in some markets, the outright purchase of FSD increases 7% in the first quarter.

Tesla CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, also hinted during the call that the wide approval of FSD in Europe would come around Q3 2026.

By removing the FSD outright purchase option, Tesla is aiming to increase its recurring revenue from the AI software’s subscription-based pricing model.

If a Tesla owner subscribes to FSD for €7,500 in Europe or $7,500 in North America, the €199 or $199 per month subscription will break even in 37.6 months or around 3.1 years.
