Although Musk is the world’s first and only trillionaire, he doesn’t let his ego get in the way of communicating with his customers. He still often interacts with Tesla owners and enthusiasts on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Elon Musk has a history of deploying features to Tesla vehicles at the request of customers. One such interesting feature request came from a Tesla customer, issuing voice commands to FSD using the in-car Grok AI Assistant.
Grok AI Assistant has been available in Tesla vehicles in North America since last year, and it expanded to Europe earlier this year. The automaker keeps improving Grok integration and features via free OTA software updates.
The mercurial CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, didn’t deny the customer’s requisition; he nodded to make this work and even predicted a timeline.
The following conversation took place between the customer (probably a retail investor in TSLA as well) and Elon Musk:
Kristin Hendricks: Tesla FSD is 🪄. Need to be able to converse w/ Grok like we can with an Uber driver: “Hey Grok, turn right here.” “Drop us off right here, we’ll walk due to traffic.” “Drop at entrance first, then park far away.”
Elon Musk: This functionality will be there in about 3 months or so.
Although Musk has replied with a positive answer, the actual rollout of this feature might take significantly more than 3 months. Elon Musk usually has over-ambitious or over-optimistic timelines for project deliveries; it has been so rampant that people refer to it as Elon Time.
Grok’s Fusion with Tesla FSD
Grok and Tesla FSD work as independent artificial intelligence (AI) entities inside a Tesla vehicle. Both of these serve a different purpose. The current state of Grok’s integrations in Tesla vehicles limits it to infotainment features and AI conversation during journeys.
In the current state, Tesla owners can issue navigation commands using Grok in their cars. This Tesla fan is asking for next-level control that Grok will have over Full Self-Driving (FSD).
The owner of Gork AI is SpaceX, which is another company owned by Elon Musk. SpaceX also owns xAI and the X social media platform. However, Tesla has a significant investment in SpaceX.
Allowing Grok to issue live FSD commands can potentially have safety issues. The AI of Grok is also developed separately; it’s not purpose-built for Tesla FSD.
However, Musk can always ask the Tesla and SpaceX teams to collaborate on a special version made for Tesla vehicles. Parking and pickup commands make sense, but asking Grok to issue commands during FSD seems to have potential safety issues.
Integrating two large AI platforms to have a better autonomous driving experience seems an interesting and exciting venture. However, it’s not as easy or viable as it may appear to a common Tesla owner.
Three months seems to be a very optimistic timeline for this integration. Stay tuned for future updates on this.
