With each passing day, the customer deliveries of the 2021 Tesla Model S and Model X design refresh models are coming close. Besides the extensive interior design changes, the Silicon Valley automaker is also working on the next major software version release, the V11 OTA update.

Looking at the digital smart gear shift controls video earlier and the following new screens and video of the user-interface of the Model S refresh prototype center touchscreen, we can see that the Tesla V11 update looks pretty interesting.

V11 vehicle controls UI

Since Tesla is making a big jump from the firmware V10 to V11, the changes to the UI are expected to be major. The vehicle controls or settings menu in this next big update is opened by tapping the small vehicle icon on the far left of the center touchscreen (see screenshot and video clip below).

This menu interface opens up the most frequently needed controls on the center touchscreen. Vehicle lock/unlock, frunk, trunk, charge port open/close, lights controls, mirror control, glovebox, and shift to Neutral icons are stacked on the top.

The middle stack contains Window lock controls, brightness, child lock, and camera controls (including display rear camera on the center display).

The third and last row contains mirror and steering wheel controls. This new V11 UI will most probably remain consistent throughout the Tesla vehicle lineup.

2021 Model S driving modes

The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid is the world’s fastest production car ever made. It can achieve a 0-60 mph time in under 2 seconds (Plaid & Plaid+ variants). This calls for some serious software enhancements that Tesla seems to have made with the Model S Plaid launch control system.

The above screenshot of the 2021 Model S V11 “Driving” tab shows various drive modes available to the driver. There are three modes to choose from, Chill, Sport, and Insane. Most probably on a Plaid and Plaid+ variant, the Insane tab would become Plaid.

The Insane mode has a further interesting sub-option of “Drag Strip Mode”, the tab for this mode also shows a rocket icon on the left. This special drag race mode should slay any sports car on the dragstrip.

There are also 3 steering wheel modes as well, Comfort, Standard, and Sport — the last one should double the joy of driving the new-gen Model S in a drag race.

Tesla has also provided the Smart Shift (autonomous drive and reverse gear selection) to be turned ON or OFF via a toggle button through the Driving Mode user interface.

Tesla seems to have been waiting for the Model S/X refresh customer deliveries in order to start pushing the V11 software update to the entire fleet. Some new Tesla Model S refresh cars have just recently been spotted leaving the Fremont factory but no owner has confirmed a handover yet.
