With the introduction of the new 2021 Tesla Model S design refresh, the automaker made a bold move of removing all the stalks from the car. With no stalks present, gear selection of Drive, Reverse, and Park has been converted to digital. Either you leave it on the car to select the gears autonomously, or take control of shifting gears manually via the center touchscreen.
Elon Musk has now hinted that this new way of gear selection in a Tesla vehicle will come to the entire lineup. But this option will only be available for Tesla owners who have bought the $10,000 Full Self-Driving (FSD) package.
The new Tesla Model S and Model X center touchscreens have the newly designed user interface and Model 3 and Model Y are still running the older one. With this new update for the cars equipped with FSD, the interface will also be updated for sure.
However, this newly invented gear selection method by Tesla and the Yoke steering wheel did not receive a warm welcome. But with time the complaints are fading away as more and more owners are getting used to these features.
This way Tesla will also give a perk of a different software version and UI to Tesla owners who have spent a hefty amount of money on the yet-to-be-finalized Full Self-Driving package.
